considering mauser 98/48 . have heard on this forum that Mitchell's is overpriced but I'm willing to pay the $499 for higher grade model if its good quality and a good shooter. What is anyone's opinion/ experience?

My opinion, based on the fact that the Mitchell's M48 was in no part in German hands as was the German K98k, and based on the price difference between the M48 and the K98k, is go for the K98k. Save yourself some money and get the real thing at the same time. I have an M48 Yugo I bought several years ago in "military new condition" and while it's a nice rifle, I like my K98k better overall.

Don't do it! That's way more than any M-48 is worth. For $500 you can buy yourself a Mauser or two that WILL go up in value and IS actually worth something. I'd eye a 1909 Argie, a Venezuelan or Brazilian, one of the unissued Persians, or any of the original carbines. The best condition M-48 in the world with the brightest cosmo-free stock is still only worth about $250.

If you have that much money buring a hole in your pocket, you can buy a Swede M38 or 1909 Argie or buy both a Swede M96 and a Persian 98/29. All four of these rifles are in a completely different universe of quality in comparison to the yugo.

If the Swedes and Persians are the Caddillacs and Lexus's of the mauser world, the Yugos are the Yugos of the mauser world.;) I wouldn't pay more than $150 for a Yugo, and then it had better be in excellent condition.

Mitchell's Mauser's are the biggest ripoff out there. Their advertising is decieving and people are thinking they're getting a WWII relic. When in truth the rifle is a post war piece. I nearly bought one of their rifles a couple of years ago, but didn't after reading horrible reviews.

If you want a decent K98 I'd highly suggest that you look at a Russian Capture (RC) K98. Interordnance is selling RC K98's right now. Letter Coded K98's are $200 and number coded K98's are $220.

I recieved a # coded K98 from them and was really satisfied. I recieved a nice piece with most of the codes in tact and a good bore.
