I was at cabelas today and came across some "Military Grade 00 Buck". The packaging looked like the lake city ammo I bought a few years ago. Anyway, it was $6 for 5 shells. Is it worth it? What is the difference between military grade and commercial 00 Buck?

"Mil Spec" 12ga 00 is nothing special. I have been purchasing Federal Flight Control Buck for less then $5 for 5 rounds every time Copes Distributing gets it in stock. They currently only have Winchester 12Ga. 2 3/4 in. 00Buck 15rnd. Box for $13.99. But if your looking for slugs:

Federal Premium Law Enforcement 12 GA Tactical Ammunition 2 3/4 inch 1oz, Maximum Muz Volicity 1300fps, Low Recoil Rifled Slug HP LE127RS 5rnd. Box

$4.29

The Winchester 00 buck "military" loads are worth the $5/5, for me. Not low recoil, buffered, 1500fps. VERY serious loads.

i bought a few boxes for keepsake purposes shot 2 of the 3 boxes nothing special i still prefer the Remington 9 pellet 00
its manufactured by Odin a subsidiary of winchester and i believe its loaded the same way winchester loads there 9 pellet 00
the only difference would be the OD hull correct me if im wrong

The pellets are also plated/jacketed to comply with the Hauge(?) accords.

Ya, they are OD green and the brass on them is dulled by some sort of oil or finish.

No, they are not. They also have nothing to do with any military agreements.

The "Mil-Spec" Winchester 00 buckshot is the worst 00 buckshot you can buy. It doesn't have a shot cup, it has unplated shot, and will produce some of the worst patterns in most scatterguns.

The basic Winchester Super-X 00 buckshot you can pick up at Wal-Mart is a much better buy compared to the "Mil-Spec" shells. At least it has a shot-cup, and is cheaper.

Question of what the application would be for these. At 1500 fps, these carry a lot of energy. They would probably over-penetrate a human target at close range. Inside a building, they would most likely go through several sheetrock walls and so forth. Perhaps great for urban warfighting, even with the wide shot spread due to the lack of the shot cup -- less need for perfect aim.

But if you wanted these for indoor HD use, probably much too powerful from what I am learning, researching HD loads. Overpenetration is a big issue.

Try them out and shoot them. If they work in your shottie then buy up a bunch. Cups, no cups, plated, not - means nothing until you've tried it.

Winchester milspec works great in my 590 and I've got 9 rounds in the gun, 6 in the sidesaddle and 50 boxes tucked away to prove it. My 870 hates the stuff but shoots Federal Premium 2 3/4" Magnum #1 buck in nice TIGHT patterns out pretty far.
