Has anyone here bought from Mitchell's Mausers before and how did they like their weapon? Any ideas on where to find a better price perhaps? Thanks fellas.

Mitchell's has some great looking refurbished Mausers, and for the most part, can be good shooters too.
However, if you think you are getting authentic Nazi stamped Mausers, rumor has it that they have their own stamps for that.

All you need to do is talk to collectors of truly authentic Nazi made Mausers.

I have not read anything good about Mitchell's Mausers.

I would suggest you check out:
classicarms.us
aimsurplus.com
Gunbroker and other auction sites
local gun shows

To look for K98 mausers at better prices, and in the last case guns that you can see for yourself before buying. AIM and Classic Arms often post photos of each individual gun in their used sections allowing you to have a good idea of exactly what you're getting, and of course an auction would be the same.

I was actually in the market for a vintage Nazi K98. This is good to know since I thought Mitchell's was a reputable gun dealer. Thanks for the heads up.

What's the typical price for a K98 with Nazi markings you've seen?

I got a nice 8mm k98k from a local gunstore. It is marketed with nazi markings but also has a russian capture "x" on the reciever. The gun is in mint condition and I paid 400.00$ for it. I wouldn't pay anymore than that unless I could verify that the rifle was indeed a true german/nazi serialized rifle.

I own two Yugomausers from Mitchell's.
I bought both as shooters, not collectors.
In my case, I was perfectly happy to pay the prices asked to avoid either a beat-to-hell relic or a cosmo-packed lump of grease I'd have to spend hours de-gunking.

No experience or comment on the German guns, just responding to the "reputable dealer" comment.
If you understand up front what you want, what you expect, what they sell, and what you're getting, there's nothing wrong with buying from Mitchell's.

Do your research first, as you should always, and go from there.
Quite happy with my two shooters, both accurate & both good-looking examples of a classic military rifle design that weren't worn out long before I got 'em.

I have a Class 3 C&R license and Southern Ohio Guns has some Russian captures in "nice clean condition" for $279, but most have been scrubbed of nazi markings. SOG is a reputable company but only sells to license holders. They are not the only ones with this type of firearm.

I only mention this to give you an idea of price ranges.

Anyone looking for authentic Mausers should check with their gunshops and ask if they can order from reputable dealers offering these firearms.

As DPris noted, if you are looking for a nice looking shooter, then Mitchell's does offer refurbished Mausers that look nice and are very functional. If you buy the lower price tier, you'll likely get a decent shooter. You are basically paying them to refurbish a firearm, and that's ok, they deserve to make money for that service.
It's the implied wording that these higher tier rifles are from a "rare cache" of K98k Mausers, that gets a little hard to swallow.

A good friend of mine works in this hole in the wall firearms shop. The specialize in WW2 military firearms as well as anything old and odd. If you give them a call, ask for Justin. He knows more about collector K98s than anyone I have ever met.

Oh and the web site does not even begin to show their stock. You'll have to call to get an idea of what he has in stock.

good god why would you pay that kind of money for a refurbished mauser when you can throw down that kind of cash on some of the best mausers ever made.

For $600 you can get Swedish, Persian, Argentine and Venezuelan mausers in like new condition along with a crate of ammo. These are simply the best 98s ever made, and they are far better then any German K98...especially a refurbished POS by mitchells.

seriously just troll around on gunbroker, you can get excellent mausers in like new condition all day long for $300-400. There is absolutely no reason why anyone should ever be buying any of that overpriced crap at mitchells.

But do what you want, because as they say. A fool and his money will soon be parted.

As an aside - watch gun classifieds too. A local board recently had a classified ad offering a K98 with unblemished Nazi markings and VG overall condition for $150. A lot of people just need to sell guns for money right now. I wish I had jumped on that one but I debated and it sold.

Hint: German K98's never had chrome/in-the-white/shiny bolt handles...

Does that mean that my gold-plated, slang-script-engraved K98 wasn't authentic?

Not necessarily, if the sights are down the left side, instead of on top; ala the ghetto-glock...or unless yours has a bedazzled-stock? That might have been a "limited run" designed by Paul Mauser's super-fabulous brother Bruno :uhoh:

They did, and if you can find one, they are worth money, hey, take a load of 'aks' south, maybe a cartel wants to upgrade...

Seriously, spell MR. superflys name right BRNO, and he did may damn fine rifles, don't know about the rhinestones and gold spraypaint though...

as for Mitchels, well I have a real nice 'rare' Mosin Nagant for sale, only $400, and I'll throw in OVER $200 WORTH OF ACCESSORIES...
Yeah, they are in the same class as your street corner watch sales men, Folexes anyone?

All i heard about mitchells has been that if the price is right for a shooter grade rifle go for it, but the stamps are going to be fake. But a refurbished shooter is a refurbished shooter, i guess it just depends on what you want the rifle for. basically if you just want to shoot it, your getting a decent deal if the price is right, but as a collector your getting shafted.

I agree with winchester '97. If all I wanted was a good, clean shooter and I could get a Mitchell's for less than $400 I would go for it.

Mitchell's does a great job of packaging and advertising but it has long been suspected that the firm is a sales outlet for Zastava Arms in Serbia. Zastava was building rifles for Remington, and has been in the small arms mfg business for years. They re-furbished many of the K98's with Yugo markings and the M24/47's as well.

The other perception is that Zastava rebuilds and stamps the K98's, ships to Mitchell's which sells them at prices far higher than what the rifles are worth.

If you want to see just how high some of the prices have gone, take a look at Miltech. 10 years ago when I first found the site they were charging around $975 for a rebuilt K98. The stock is a Boyds stock.

'Somebody' must be buying some of these things.

prices far higher than what the rifles are worth.
They are "worth" what people are willing to pay. If people are paying the asking price, then that IS what they are worth.
