I got my 91/59 today. While disassembling this very greasy rifle, I found that the action screws were tight, but the magazine was loose. Turns out the threads in the rear magazine/trigger guard are crossed. Thankfully, the screws are usable. From what I can tell, the thread size is a 7mm x .80. The closest size I can find online is a 7mm x .75. I'm guessing this would work or is there a standard tap that is closer to this size? Thanks for any insight on this subject.

I did a search for

Nagant screw threads this is my first hit from google.

http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinSpec.htm

As you will see when you scroll down the thread sizes for the Guard screws are .256 X 32

This is just .006 larger then 1/4", and 32 is a special standard that should not be do hard to find.

Hope this helps.

Just so you don't make bigger problem for yourself try this. Whenever I run into this problem I always buy a tap for what I want to screw into. I then test the screw I took out with the hole in scrap that I made with the tap. If it screws right in I know I'm good to go. If not I try something different. This has prevented me from bunging many a gun. And after awhile you willhave all the taps you need to test just about anything. Buying tools is never a waste of money.

I can't find a tap that size, so I'll guess I'll buy a new magazine. Or I could shim the mag. and make that 1.5-2 turns of the screw work.
