I'm curious about the brass nose cap and other items on my Mosin 91/30. Looking on 7.62x54r.net, their pictures don't show brass or mention it at all. Is this an odd variation or something? I have brass on the nose cap, and on each end of the handguard on top of the barrel (right after the rear sight, and right before the front sight, on top of the rifle). You can kinda see it in the pic below. Anyone know if this is standard? Did I get something different/interesting/rare..?

Interesting, but not rare. One of mine has a few brass accoutrements, the other two are steel. I'm unaware of any explanation for the variance in material...

I've noticed that most of the ones I've seen brass handguards on have been early non-hex 91/30s. Dunno if it was for any particular reason.

Somehow I had the idea they are all brass, but most are shellacked over in black.

I dunno really. But I've seen it before.

Interesting... I didn't realize they were coated in black. I guess that might make sense. Perhaps they left the black off of rifles when they needed them right away during WWII. Who knows..?

They're all brass. Most are just tarnished to hell and lacquered over. You can polish any of them to look like that. Bit of Brasso or Wright's Brass Polish.

I do on my one w/Laminate stock

Yes - I do have one w/ brass, it is on my 91/30 w/ a laminated stock. I thought it was a dressy parade or honor guard service weapon of some type ??????????? Any one know ?? I also have a M38 in shiny chrome ??

consider yourself lucky, if you find any mosin variant will all the brass pieces it should have!!! mostly around the sling slits, these are missing.
