I just received a Mossberg 464. This is the brush gun version from Davidsons with a 16 inch barrel, Marine coat finish and laminate stock.

The stock is the nicest looking of all my lever guns and the fit is better than any of my winchesters or Marlins.

This has the williams firesights and although these are viewed as an upgrade I think I prefer the old style buckhorn sights.. The firesights are too fine and take too long to get aligned for my taste.

I would call the action a cross between and 94 AE because it has a rebounding hammer and a 336 because of the round bolt.
The top of the receiver is open but it has a band in the rear so a 2 piece scope base can be used. It ejects to the right just like a winnie angle eject.

The tang safety is very stiff which I think is good as I don't see any reason to ever engage the safety under normal use as the trigger safety keeps the hammer away from the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled and lever held firmly.
The tang safety will be useful during decocking and storing when loaded.
The hammer will fall when the safety is on but is blocked from the firing pin very much like a cross bolt safety on a Marlin.

I only shot it 30 rounds with the open sights but accuracy seems on par with all my other lever guns. It does have more bark than the 20 inch barreled 30-30's though.

I ordered a Simmons 1.5x5 shot gun scope with the diamond retical from Natcheze so in the next 2 weeks I'll shot some groups and see where it's at accuracy wise.

Overall I'm super impressed with this gun. Of the current lever guns I think this is the one to have although I don't necessarily like it better than my older non safety 336's.

Thats a very good looking gun. I grew up with lever action... 94 22, and a browning 71 high grade.

How accurate is the shooting?

That is awesome! Very interested in the gun, please keep us updated!

Thanks,

Matt

They been building the 464 for a long time. Not as long as Marlin or Winchester, but long enough to have worked out the kinks decades ago. Always been a decent shooter :)

Great Gun! Congrats!!!!
I have one myself! Love it! :D

The only problem I have with it is there are no studs for mounting a sling...

Fun to shoot and easy to carry (with out a sling).

The 464's are great rifles, sort of a hybrid between the Winchester 94, and the Marlin 336. No, they haven't been building them for decades-they are a completely new design that came out about 6 years ago. The tang safety is a big improvement over the cross bolt design for quick shooting. I love Marlins, but the Mossbergs have been much better quality than the new Marlins. I'm waiting for a 45/70 version!

i think brocluno was thinking about the mossberg 472, but is the new one a new design? I have always liked mossbersgs and would like to own a 464.

very cool gun. Ive been wanting a .30-30 (as i think every gun cabinet needs one :D). Nothing tho has tickled my fancy till now, when money is available i may have to get one of these.

Yeah, I guess it was the 472? I just remember shooting my uncles Mossy lever and thinking it was a cool rifle. That was 20 years ago. Been trying to find one at a decent price ever since (casual looking) - but they don't come up often.

Did not connect the model numbers. Looks like a good build, Will be looking for the range report :)

scope002.jpg scope003.jpg Got my scope from Natchez yesterday and mounted her up. I am hoping to get out shooting this weekend.

I went with a Simmons 1.5x5 illuminated shotgun scope. I used a two piece base with cheap medium height rings.

The cheek weld is perfect and the shotgun scope give me around 5 inches of eye relief.
I am more concerned with speed than ultimate accuracy which is why I like low magnification scopes on my woods guns.

That looks like a handy, well made gun.

Is the Marine Coat a rust resistant coating over carbon steel or a coating over stainless steel?

I like to keep my guns looking good, but I buy stainless for the protection of the bore not the outside of the gun. If the marine coat doesn't protect the bore I'll stick with regular bluing.

I bought one last year at Christmas and I have been very impressed with it. I handload and with a Nikon Prostaff it is very accurate. I haven't gotten any pics of the groups but I am very pleased with them. I bought some of the Hornaday LeverRevolution bullets but haven't tried them yet. I am hoping to get 1-1/2 to 2 inch groups at 100yds.

Let us know how that scope holds up. I put one on a Marlin Camp 9 and the scope pretty well regurgitated itself within 300 rounds. The innards came loose I guess the reticle is etched on a contact lense type piece of glass or plastic. Anyway, it began to rotate inside the tube and could not be adjusted by the knobs. That was my last Simmons. I wouldn't have thought a 9mm carbine would be harder on a scope than a SG.

So I finally shot it for groups yesterday.

My private range has target stands at 30 yards and at 75 yards.
I tried Reminton 150 grain core lockt. Those are absolutely the crappiest ammo I have ever seen. It looked like every round in the box was seated at a different depth. One bullet I even pulled out with my fingers.
They also grouped much worse than my old stand by Federal classic power shock 150grain.

Summary is, this rifle is very, very accurate.
At 30 yards I shot 5 shot groups you could completely cover with a nickle.

The 75 yards groups varied from 1-1/4 inch at the worst to a best of 7/8 inch.
However, I was using a shotgun scope with a turkey plex reticle. That scope had a very thick/course cross hair that at 75 yards covers the center dot on the target making precise sighting difficult.

I am completely sold on Simmons scopes. I have them on 3 of my guns and of all the cheap scopes I like them the best.

Obviously your luck with them has been different.

RalleyHound:

My nephew bought same Davidson model. We mounted a Bushnell 1.5X - 4.5X scope and shot it from sandbags at 100 yards. It shoots an honest 2.25 inch group with Federal 170 grain ammo. Bark is a bit loud but recoil is moderate.

I'm thankful that Mossberg is building this competitive 30-30 rifle. There will always be folks that frown on Mossberg and Simmons products. They're called Elite-ists. These folks are too snobbish to realize what they're missing!!

Thank you for sharing.

I shot a box of 170 grainers first but for me the 150 grain Federal power shocks were by far the best.

And I agree the 16 inch barrel has a lot of muzzle blast to the shooter.
