hi everyone, new guy here. well after years i finally decided im going to get a ar-15. i really wanted to get a 1911 but new york state wont let me get one untill im 21(im 18 now) so i decided that getting a ar would hold me over for a few years. well heres what i want to do with it, im going to college and hopefully ill be able to get my MD one day or become a S.W.A.T. paramedic.

so i kinda want to build my ar into like a medic style rifle, like i want to get a custom dust cover thats says "do no harm". stuff like that but i dont know what else i could do to it. i dont want it to be "tacticool" with a high powered leopold scope or 3 diffrent color lasers on it, just a basic m4 style rifle. if anyone knows of weird things i could do to it that has a relation to medicine that would be awesome. the rifle will mainly be used for home defense/target shooting. any suggestions would be helpfull, thanks everyone!

1. Research exactlywhat you want. start here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_118/492084_AR15_Discussions__FAQ.html

2. go to AR15.com and read the tutorials. http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_4/226782_Assemble_your_own_LOWER__UPPER__FREE_FLOAT__TRIGGER__GAS_BLOCK___Step_by_step_instructions_.html

3. and this: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/lid=11004/learn/

4. Build your own. Since you are under 21, you will have to get an assembled lower with stock. Slap on an upper of your choice (or build it) and shoot.

5. These stores have great products at reasonable prices:
Palmetto State Armory
Bravo Co. Manufacuring. (BCM)
Aim Surplus
Surplus Ammo and Arms
Citizen Armory
DSG Arms
PK Firearms

A typical M4gery will do almost anthing you need it to. If you want to buy complete, there are some inexpensive models out; S&W sport, Del-ton, etc. You are not stuck with any purchase. After you shoot it a while and figure out you want to change things, an AR is easy to change. You can always sell the left over parts.

Edit: milspec has can be mis-used, but i am a firm believer in buying true milspec ARs and parts. https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pwswheghNQsEuEhjFwPrgTA&gid=5

Colt are great, but you spend to much for the name and there are better values out there. Bravo and Daniel Defense to name a few. If you find a good deal on a Colt, get it. Otherwise, spend you money wisely. I don't want to sound like a hater, because i'm not. I just think some stores, over price Colts.

Colt 6920 is less than $1300 and a very good choice to start with. Some even as low as $1100. BCM rifles are out of stock, probally for the next few years. Is DD really cheaper than Colt? LMT is another good choice.

I'd set it up like a PDW for CQB. Aimpoint H1 or Eotech XPS2-0. Troy BUIS.

I recently got a Colt 6720 for under a grand and have seen the 6920s for the same price. Colt seems to have finally realized the need for competetive pricing.

Like i said. "Colts are great". "some stores" over price Colts.

I personally do think DD is a better value. YMMV.

How so if Colts are going for less than DD rifles? I know DD rails are inluded but i personally believe they are what's truly over priced.

Better check and verify what type of "AR" is legal in NY and what kind of magazines you will be allowed to own.

I think they have a AWB style laundry list of banned features.

I second what W.E.G. says. Also, if you can, leave New York and come down to Virginia, Vermont, or anywhere else in the free world.

GandRtactical has the 6920 for under 1k and the 6940 for 1200 bucks. BCM, LMT and Daniel Defense are also really great rifles in that price range
