My new very old Colt M1911!

The "rush-rush" blueing process on the so-called Black Army 1911s, as far as I can tell, didn't begin until after something like serial # 40,0000 or so.

This one's much earlier, #2285XX, and shipped out Feb 8, 1918.

Some teasers, ... :what:

All original and never refinished, a battlefield gun ...

Original 1918 mags.

92 years and two mag dumps later: Old School is still mission-capable.

a Colt I would own.. that was way back when they were still making good pieces.

Spoken as only a person who hasn't owned a new Colt can say it - incorrectly.

hey that looks great! don't refinish it though, that'll kill the value!

Guys, take a close look at the gun. It's already been ground on and refinished. "Perking it up" with a careful polish and reblue, and correcting the alterations, would certainly enhance the value, not kill it. The only significant advantage to keeping a worn-out re-finish on a desirable gun is to perhaps dupe another buyer into thinking it's original. And that's not an honest way to go about it.

I posted more detailed pics of this gun over at M1911 Forums and the folks over there seem to agree that for the most part it's pretty original. The only thing a lot of them pointed out was the sights and the removed "USP" stamp.

Take that baby to the best 1911 Smith you can find. It's in great shape, and if it's going to be refinished, only skilled hands should touch it.

I personally wouldn't pick it up, but leave it on an alter up high. Where it could be worshiped by all.
