My problems with Cabelas

I might be a bit a jaded but I grew up in Nebraska and Cabela's was awesome till the 90's when they grew too much. I would love to have them back to 2 stores back in Nebraska. Back then prices were very competitive and had a really good return policy, probably too good. Last 20 years they are way overpriced on guns and most other merchandise, some of their brand of equipment is priced well for the quality. My local gun "dealer" in KC would kick their butt on gun prices. Now just gotta find a dealer here in CO Springs.

I’m wondering just now, was this a special order gun? A lot of times stores will make you pay for a special order when the order is placed and do the 4473 when it comes in (need the serial number) so it’s possible OP paid for a special order, they had his money and were just waiting for their supplier to send it.

I've shopped at Cabelas (and Bass Pro Shops) for the past several decades. I've always liked them; still do and probably always will. Nothing but good shopping experiences in terms of prices, inventory and customer relations for me (the obvious exception to the experiences related by most others in this thread but maybe I'm just easy to please...:)). I only wish one of their stores was located closer to where I live.

No special order. Funny thing, the first time I went in and ask for the gun, they said they had not had that gun in inventory for weeks if not longer. I politely asked them to check in back. He came out with the gun and said there were more.

The second time I went in, same routine. New guy says they don't have'm. I say yes you do. He goes back and comes out with the gun.

So much for inventory control.

My Cabela's story is first time in, looking for 38Special ammo..YUGE(pre covid) stacks of various ammo. Gent walks up and asks if he can help, "38 special ammo(had a new, to me, S&W 642)"..walks to another lane, hands me a box of 38...buy, leave and discovered 38 'Super' doesn't fit....

Cabela's is a 'big box store', with all the goods and others. I've had more problems online buying with them than in store..like listing as 'in stock' and then me buying some 380 ammo..then get the email saying 'not in stock'....if not exist, shouldn't list..happening now with some email ads I'm getting.

So both you and he clerk did not know that 38 Super would not fit a 642? I would think you would check any box of ammo before purchase. I never rely on any clerks at big box stores or LGS for advice.

Never once had a problem with Bass Pro/Cabela's in store or on line. In fact my last adventure was a LGS that wanted $50.00 above MRSP of a Pistol and basically called me a liar when I pointed it out to him. No,Problem, Just took off to Bass Pro shops and bought the same gun for $75.00 less than the LGS. Great transaction.

I was a brand new returneee to guns, my first in about 25 years..and didn't even look at the box as I checked out. Pretty sure the clerk knew 38 super wouldn't work. I didn't know util I tried to load them at the outdoor range the next day. My point was big box store with tons of people, VERY busy, clerk made a mistake, BUT I STILL have that box of 38 super...

I had a Cabela’s clerk not understand the difference between a 22LR J frame and a 327 mag. They had a 632 marked as 22 because they thought it was a 63-2. When pointed out the problem, the clerk refused to acknowledge the Gun was 327. Had to get the old toot from the back to fix it.

Cabela's or any retailer always check your product before walking out the door. The sales people at most major retailers are not exactly a duty genius in what they are selling. Read the box next time.
