I just replaced the factory HiViz optic sights right ghost ring sights. The problem is that the rear sight that was on there was mounted on there is gone with an unappealing visible notch on the barrel. So I want to get a small rail to mount ahead of action where the old rear sight used to be. I have another marlin that already has the XS scout scope rail, and want something a bit smaller. but all the other rails seem to mount ontop of the receiver which is where my ghost ring sight is now.

like this one here.

If you check Brownell's or a few other places I bet you can find a dovetail blank to fill it. Not sure on a rail that would use the forward two receiver screw holes and the dovetail.

could I drill into a dovetail and affix a scope a rail to it or would that cause zeroing problems?

If I wanted a rail that would extend back to the reciever I would use a XS scout rail like I have on my Marlin 336. However I do not want that, and the ghost ring on the one you posted is a bit to fragile for my liking which is why I bought nice DRC ghost ring sights that are well protected.

That kind of mount falls into 'custom work' as far as I know. The picture from the OP is from WWG's sight. Looks like what you're interested in is the WWG scout scope system base.

WWG said:
Precision machined out of aluminum, our exclusive Scout Scope Base fits the Marlin Centerfire Lever Rifles and the Winchester 94. It is designed to use standard Weaver style rings, and is ideally suited for quick detachable Scout Scope systems. The only base that allows use of the rear sight if detachable or see through rings are used. Manufactured at the correct height for proper sight picture. Available in blue or silver, requires gunsmith fitting.
Retail Price: $30.00 (BASE ONLY)

I'd get in contact with them and talk to 'em about your application.

I just ordered one from them. Dovetail blank plus sight base. I will need my local smith to drill and tap the barrel, but thats pretty cheap to do.
