Hello,

I just received an order of (2) 50 round boxes of Federal HST 9mm 124gr online. I will disclose the company if this is a problem.

I picked up a round and noticed the shell/case had an abrasion/scuff on it going 1/4 around the case. I picked a few more and most had the abrasion. Some even had a gouge on the case.

Is this normal?

Damage to cases is never "normal." It is not acceptable for cheap range ammo, let alone premium that is well over a dollar a shot. It probably happened at the factory due to poor quality control, not the retailer, unless the box looks smashed.

box looks like it has very little abrasion, all from just being stacked.

Should I contact Federal?

If that is the case, the vendor should have disclosed it and given a discount. For full price, that ammo had better be in pristine condition. Maybe a little "scuffing" on a case won't hurt anything if you try to shoot it, but "gouges" or denting almost certainly would.

Can you post some pics of the bullets and the box?

A box should clearly indicate if they were factory seconds.

New Winchester Ranger T/T Series .45acp JHP +P....

I got a brand new box of duty/carry grade .45acp for my Glock 21 .45acp gen 04. My state regulates the armed security industry & recently allowed both .40s and the .45acp calibers for security officers. :D
The Ranger T/T Series rounds look fine. I like the uniform, clean design. Only 2 or so of the 50 .45acp rounds had minor scuffs. It wasn't poor QC and they looked serviceable. The Ranger T JHP +Ps were not cheap but I can't complain about the quality. I plan to keep them for a long time.

I considered the HST 230gr +P JHPs but the Ranger T/T series SXT bullet offered a bit more punch & vel. The Hornady Critical Duty +P looked good too but I'm satisfied with my purchase.

I agree to contact Federal let them know the lot #. They might send you a few free boxes & a new Federal ballcap. ;)

I have some .40 cal HST that is a special govt contract; unpolished brass, kind of crappy to look at but functionally perfect. This stuff is packaged just like any other HST but the vendor clearly described it accurately (SGAmmo.com for reference). Note that it's not "seconds" in any conventional sense, just not nickel plated and not polished. It works just the same.

Presumably this kind of contract loading exists for the 9mm, too. Good chance that's what you got. I'd contact the seller but I suppose with the lot numbers Federal could clear it up, too.

When you buy HST in 50 round boxes you are purchasing Law Enforcement surplus ammo since the only civilian packaging by Federal is in 20 round boxes and only in standard pressure ammo. How well such ammo is stored and handled can be variable and a bit of a gamble.

If you want "perfect" looking ammo get the civilian boxed product you can examine in the store and pay the $25 to $30 per 20 rounds. If the ammo is damaged to the point it is not useable in that it will not chamber, fire, feed or extract then you have a legitimate concern and reason to get your money back. This is known as implied warranty of merchantability. Take some of the scuffed up ammo to the range and try it out. Doesn't function, feed and eject then you have a complaint. Most likely it will go bang, feed and function just fine and shoot as well as you are capable. If so there is no reason not to use it for the purpose you bought it.

Right now at this very moment I have at ten 50 round boxes of HST in various calibers sitting around. Every round looks perfect, and the 50 round boxes are the only way I buy HST. To me the key thing that the OP isn't telling us is whether the cases are nickel or not. All the "regular" HST stuff is nickel plated. If it's brass then it's contracts stuff loaded for a specific client.

So these pics are pretty bad. I think it provides some context of most of the rounds.

Federal said it would not affect performance. After a second message, they said I could have them picked up to replace.

Some of them are simple dings. Others, the ding id causing a bump in the cylindrical shape of the case
