I purchased a Sig 229 barely used from a local gun shop with a good reputation. Test rounds fired through it 6/28/06.

I took it to the pistol range today and using a steady rest it shot about 3-4 inches to the left. After a friend adjusted the sights using a drift it shot right on putting a pretty nice group (3" ) at 30 feet.

I have no qualms about how it shoots but saw some "ring" like marks on the barrel when I field stripped the gun at the shop before buying it. Since putting about 250 rounds through it I have noticed the "ring" like marks a little more defined.

I asked the guy at the range who helped me with the sights what he thought and he said that automatics get those marks from the barrel being pushed back by the gas recoil.

Here are some pics of the gun and barrel and although I'm no expert in automatic pistols the marks bother me as I keep wondering if there is something wrong with the sliding action of the barrel.

Any comments are appreciated. I sure love the Sig and don't want to damage it.

Thanks!

The points of wear that you show are locking surfaces between the barrel and the slide. There are two points of contact on the top and bottom of the barrel that are suppose to contact the slide and align the barrel properly during lock up. Its completely normal to see wear like that and it means that your pistol is performing properly. I'm a Sig armorer for our department.

You will love your Sig, they are all but indestructible.

Those are normal.

Lots of Sig guys call them 'smilies'.

They will become more pronounced. It will have zero detrimental effect.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies to my question. I've waited 12 years to buy this pistol ever since shooting my brother-in-law's 226. I researched a lot and when I found this near new (1-2 month old) Sig 229 Equinox in .40 Cal for nearly the same price as a new 229R I bought it.

The Equinox does not have the DAK trigger and from talking to the guys at the range unless I were in law enforcement I will be better off with the standard DO/SO trigger on the Equinox.

I'm very impressed with the .40 Cal; nice round.

I'm new to handguns but hunted a lot when I was younger so I'm not new to firearms. My friends let me shoot their H&K's, Glocks and even an 45 Cal STI. All are nice pistols but there was something about the feel and balance of the Sig that "felt right", don't know how to explain it; I suppose everyone has a pistol that "fits".

I was concerned about the "smiles" that the barrel on the Sig displayed and am extremely happy that it's nothing to be concerned about. I have never shot a more accurate pistol and I met a couple of guys at the range that shoot combat and have encouraged me to come out and shoot.

Thanks again for the replies. :)

I followed the same path as you did; lots of shotgun shooting growing up, but late to get to pistols. Went the Sig path and never looked back. My only problem is lack of money and 'slots' (the deal with my wife is I can have four firearms :p). So I tend to sell one to buy another.

I'm currently going through a 45 ACP phase. Have a GSR Revolution Stainless and a P220 Carry SAO on order. :)
