I am looking to add to/replace the sights on my Chinese SKS. It shoots great, but the stock sights really suck, to put it mildly.

Right now the options that i am looking at are as follows:

1. Millet scope mount that replaces the rear sight, and allows mounting a red dot sight in a scout configuration. I like the design of this, except for the fact that it replaces the rear sight, so if i ran out of batteries, i could potentially be screwed since i wouldn't have any backup sights.

2. Williams fire sights. These would replace the original sights, and would provide an apature rear sight, and a nice light gathering front sight. The only downside is that i have heard that they are somewhat fragile.

3. The third option is to mount a red dot sight on one of those rear cover mounts. These ofcourse come with their own problems, of not being all that secure, and will they rezero decently after removing the cover for cleaning. But i am not sure how much of a problem this will be when using a red dot sight that cover 3-4 MOA, and when shot between 50-150 yards.

So i would appreciate anyone's input as to what would be the best option out of these choices.

I'm thinking about scoping one of my SKS's and am leaning toward these two options:

1. Choate mount - drill and tap to side of receiver.

2. Attaching rail to mount side mount ala SAIGA or AK style side mount scope. I already have the mount, but would have to purchase the rail, drill and tap/glue rail to receiver.

3. Option three is to shoot with iron sights and quit worrying about it....

I have the Williams Fire Sights set. The rear aperture is an improvement over the stock rear. The Mojo rear is also good, but the elevation screw got in my way, so I sold it to my buddy (screw didn't bother him).

The front Williams sight is a bit fragile, but it's inside the front sight protector, isn't it? That same protector, though, blocks out much of the light that goes into the glowing plastic insert, so unless you've got 12:00 sunlight going down the top hole, it doesn't glow all that much. I kept the Williams rear and went with the stock SKS front. More adjustment that way, too. The Williams front is fixed to one side, and that's it.

I shoot about 3-4" at 100 yds with that setup using AE ammo. Good 'nuff, eh? ;)

I got the Williams both front and rear on my Norinko. Big improvement and I think money well spent, lets face it, the stock sights suck. I really had a hard time getting the original rear sight off and ended up cutting it in half with a Dremel. A little fragile, sure, but so what? Front sight in low light or cloudy day, sure it doesn't work as intended, but it ends up being the same as if you had the standard front sight on, again, so what? The way I look at this Norinco is it is just a cheap plinker and cheap to shoot and fun to shoot. My other SKS's are another Norinco that I put a folding stock, all steel gas tube and 30 rd mag, another plinker and fun. My other one is a beautigul Romanian which I left as is.

Talking about putting a scope on, in my experience it doesnt work. Maybe on a European one, but not on a Norinco. I have tried just about every mount out there and just wasted many dollars and many hours of my time only to get frustrated. It may be just me and my rifle, but I could not zero the scope to save my soul. I'd get close but each shot would put POI at another setting, time after time after time. I think there is just too much recoil to use a scope effectively. IMHO.

I have the millet scope mount on mine. It was difficult to install at first but once you get all the peices to fit, it can be taken on and off easily w/out losing zero. Unfortunately you do have to remove it to clean. Its a lot of fun w/ my c-more red dot sight.

Clean a "sks?"

What is this "clean" you speak of?

The trunk SKS has a Millet setup on it and a stubbie little scope but just run a bore snake though it when warm and you'er good to go.

None of this "clean and rezero business here" says Grog Gunbanger.

I had a see thru B-square on mine that worked beautifully, but it was way out of zero if you took it off and put it back on. But I found the perfect solution. I'm with Grog:D If it can't stand a few trips to the range with me without having to have it's inerds all cleaned up, how did it fair in those rice paddies?
