New to reloading

I like HS-6 for 9x19mm and 44 Mag. It'll push the 9 to middle-high velocities and the 44 to low-middle velocities. Very nice.

While very informative the guy is biased as hell and very proud of it. It's almost a fun read because this. Anyhow I've made these observations thus far and I'm only going to start chapter 7.

Biased? Ever go into a MacDonalds and see s sign about how much better the burgers were down at Burger King?

Regarding where to buy, be you factor in the shipping charges.

Here is a dealer that has excellent pricing and realistic shipping.

i'd buy local to start with. 1 box of primers and 1, maybe 2nd lbs of a different powder with a different burn rate. yes it will cost more, but by the time you factor in the $40 in shipping and hazmat fees to buy online you're probably coming out ok. No sense in buying 20k primers and 15lbs of powder to start with.

30/30 is a lot of fun to reload for. you can load some light loads and it becomes a lot more pleasant to shoot. And the lee book, at least the old one, had a section on reduced power lead loads for 30/30.

Went and picked up some essentials today. Stopped by a local gun store I'd never been too. I took my CCW class with the owners wife a couple years ago and remembered her saying they were opening the store and it would have a bit of reloading gear. I decided to go with TiteGroup. I ended up calling my Dad to see what he uses and figured for my first time I'd go with that and do more experimenting later.

So I picked up 1lb of TiteGroup. $18. 1000 CCI small #500 primers -- $28.50. 250 Frontier 9mm FML 115 gr bullets. All told that's 7 bucks for 50. Half cost the cheapest 9mm I'm able to find in the area. Not too shabby. The only unfortunate part is that no one in town had a die set. So I get to drive a little over an hour tomorrow night and run to Cabelas in Omaha and get the 9mm set. I'm hoping they have a turret plate as well.

I also picked up the Lyman 49th book today as well. I really like the layout of the book. It's not as extensive as the lee though. However it does show a titegroup load and the lee does not. I'm going batty learning this stuff. It's so subject to interpretation.

Grabbed some zilla too. Gonna put them in the shaker here in a bit and see how they come out.

Thanks again for all the help. I'll be referencing this threat quite a bit. I haven't even loaded anything yet and I"m wanting to go buy a 45 again just so I can load my left over brass. Plus I just miss having an XD.

I like Titegroup personally. Just be real careful on making sure every case looks like it has the same charge. A little Titegroup goes a long way. I use a dowel rod piece cut, then I marked a line on the piece to let me know where it's supposed to be with proper charge. If lines below case, its under charged. If its over case mouth then its over charge. I check every case every time every session with my dowel rod homemade powder cop.

I plan to be. Ill probably measure almost every charge this firs go around. Mostly since its load development but also for my newby status.

I've weighed every charge since I started reloading. Which hasn't been too long but I've loaded quite a few since March. Wow I can't believe I'm closing in on a year of reloading. Time flies when having fun. :D

Personally I'd start with the 44 & 30-30. Most forgiving to errors. You can use 2400 for both. 9 Rn are a little tricky to seat properly. I'd leave the 270 to last. The HF calipers and FA digital scale are good. I've heard the Lee scale has problems but I don't have one. Use the hodgdon on-line load site. Guess you know where Wahoo is.

Ok so I shot my first few reloads yesterday. Had some that wouldn't cycle the slide. Some that worked really well for light loads and one load that looks extremely promising. I'm using tg and using the .4 disk on the lee measure which when weight is right at 4.45 grains. My oal was 1.1525. I went long on purpose the first time. The 4.45 load still seems a bit weak compared to factory ammo. Only a tad though. I'm loading up another 50 tonight at 1.12 and see how I like that. That's the same load my dad uses and I think the deeper seating depth should give me what I want. For giggles I'm going to load up 10 or 20 with 4.65 grains (.43 measure) an use the 1.525 oal on it. This is a more than max load in Lyman's book but less than max on the side of the bottle. Ill probably just do 10 and see how it goes.

I really dislike how lee only gives you a preset number of measures in the disks. I'd be willing to pay more for more disks that went up on .01 measures instead of random increments. Allows one to be more precise. As it turns out I've found one that works this time but next time that may not be. I know they have the micro adjustable measure but it gets bad reviews. Ill probably try it anyway but it sucks. It does however throw extremely consistent charges. I never weighed one that was off I made 70 rounds weighing every 5 th. dead on.

I know with tg it's hot so I've been looking down into every shell casing as I go. Doing this its pretty easy to tell of you quit paying attention and double charges a load. Plus I'd have to short stroke the turret as well.

Thanks again for all the help this far. Any tips or pointers or things I'm doing wrong please point out. I'd rather learn correctly than have to relearn later.

I don't know of the powder is hot or not but I think you meant fast.

I have no problem with the disk as they are but I also have 4 sets of them. If I wanted a different size if just gone one out. I did push a bushing in one. They are cheap.

you'll probably find that the disk throws with less precision than .1 grains. EX: If you were trying to drop 4 grains it will probably drop between 3.85 and 4.15 grains.

I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere in the lee book that he found that charge variations less than 10% had no practical effect on accuracy. As in, offhand, at 25yds, with big blocky sights, you cannot physically take advantage of the enhanced precision of hand weighing charges to the exact grain like you can with a rifle.

Believe it or not so long as the powder cup has more than 1/4 full of powder it's accurate every powder charge I measure. Go below 1/4 full and it's .15 to .2 grains lighter. I put together 200 rounds last night and it was accurate every time I checked it.
