There are fiber sights and fiber night sights. Fiber sights just take the existing light and put it all through the end of the fiber length so it is extremely bright. In a low light setting that will not work. That's why I like night sights. I use TFO night sights. Best of both worlds.

Critical? As in never going out at night - or sooner going unarmed -than not having them? I would not go quite that far. 
Nice to have? Definitely. Over time I am going to upgrade my defensive handguns to night sights. I do want the ampoules to be ringed with white for daytime use, and Meprolight and Trijicon deliver on this. The TruGlo TFOs - which combine fiber optic with tritium inserts - might be the best of both worlds on paper, but I haven't tried these yet.
