Fellow voting NRA Members, I ask your serious consideration of these candidates for the NRA Board of Directors in 2006. Most are incumbents and all are exemplary in their dedication to the defense of the Second
Amendment. Please visit their web pages and judge for yourself. I am listing special candidates and their links on my personal 'NRA stuff' website at http://NRAWinningTeam.com/

At this time, I am listing 4 particularly notable candidates:

John Sigler, current 1st Vice President, from Delaware
Tom Gaines, current California Board Member
Scott Bach, incumbent from New Jersey
John Burtt, first-time candidate, chair of 50 Cal. Institute

Bios and links available at the above URL. Thanks,

Mike Haas

Not listed there

Johny Nugent of Indiana is also trying to get on the Board. He is an Indiana state Senator working on a lifetime liscense this year.

Nominated by petition or committee? As a general guideline, I don't vote for anyone nominated by committee, although I sometimes make exceptions.

I highly recommend Amy Heath, Jeff Cooper's granddaughter. She got on the ballot through massive public support, and is very worthy of your vote, IMHO.

The vote

I'm sure all the candidates have qualifications that are worthy of their being on the ballot. But . . . I believe it would be easier to list the few that are considered less deserving of a board position.

I got American Rifleman today and filled out my ballot. The people who got my votes were the blue-state candidates (because I felt they represented the places that need the most help) and those who had the best record as fighters fro 2A rights.

I thought that almost every blue-state candidate had a good fighting record, though this was most certainly not true of the red-state ones.

You shouldn't miss David Codrea's post on the NRA elections. Specifically, he posted a questionaire he would like to see all candidates for the position of director answer. A rather excellent idea I think. I am not a voting member yet but I not only want to know that they are an active champion for the second amendment but that they will also help steer the NRA ideologically. The NRA has had too many misteps in its history that I don't ever want to see repeated.

1. Do you believe that the Constitution is the "supreme law of the land" and that the Bill of Rights acknowledges the birthrights of all Americans?

2. If so, should these rights be proactively protected from infringement by all levels of government, including city, county and state?

3. Please give some examples of gun laws you consider constitutional.

4. Please give some examples of gun laws you consider unconstitutional.

5. Does the right to bear arms include the right for any peaceable citizen to carry them concealed without a permit, as in Vermont?

6. Do you believe that Americans have a right to own, use and carry weapons of military pattern?

7. Do you support or oppose Project Exile, and do you agree with current NRA management’s call to “enforce existing gun laws”?

8. Do you support or oppose licensing requirements to own or carry firearms? Why?

9. What specific gun laws will you work to get repealed?

10. If elected to the NRA Board, will you back your words of support for firearms rights up with consistent actions? How?

11. Do you agree with the way NRA assigns political ratings? If not, what would you change and why? Who would you have given a different rating to, what would it been and why?

12. Do you disagree with any policies being promulgated by NRA management? What is you biggest area of dissent? Have you offered superior alternatives and worked with others to implement them?

13. Have you ever publicly spoken out against an NRA position because you thought it was wrong? When, where, and what were the results?

14. What reforms do you think are needed at NRA and why?

15. If elected, how will you inform members of your performance and voting record? Will you let us know when you dissent and why?

And what's the right scope here?

I'd love to see someone with the stones to answer #3 none and #4 all . . .

But strategy wise, I'm not sure that's the way to get things done.

BTW, John Sigler is THE MAN that pulled NRA's finances together years ago when the association "teetered economically". He really saved NRA with his monetary genius - there's a reason he's First Vice-President. BTW, for those that didn't know, "First Vice President" is a board-elected position that is slated to become NRA's next president. John should be elected president by the board in 2007. (Second moves up to first, a new Second is chosen, etc, each 2 years. The 'fast track' is normally 4 years to president unless something unexpected happens. Charlton Heston was "something unexpected". He stayed president for 5 years, so Kayne Robinson stayed 1st VP for that long, and Sandy Froman - the current pres - stayed 2nd VP too of course.)

John got there because he received the respect of the entire board as well as the membership.

John's a great guy too - he makes a good friend.

This is a friendly reminder that your votes must be received by the NRA by April 30th. Need to get 'em in the mail if you haven't done so.
