Need opinions on the NRA, thinking of joining, just wanted to see how many out there are members, any Pro's or Con's.

Life Member this year.

They might not be the sharpest cheese in the display case on occasion (such as when they made pre-election deals with Jim McGreasy in PRNJ), but they're the biggest game in town and they strike fear into the likes of Kerry. You can always join other groups as well or instead.

I see no reason not to go for at least a one-year membership if you want to support RKBA.

Join! In fact, in the Christmas holiday mood, I'll sign you up for a 1 year membership if you want.

Belonging to the NRA is very important to the future of shooting, and Titus has made you an offer you can't refuse! :)

The NRA is the 800 lb. gorilla when it comes to lobbying in DC. While they may be somewhat stodgy, every gun owner who is interested in preserving their civil rights should join.

If you can spare the cash, memberships in GOA, SAS, or JPFO are a good idea as well.

Doesn't hurt, definitely helps, the magazine is good too.

You may even decide to become a Life member.

I am not 100% in agreement with everything the NRA says or does but, I feel that everyone who enjoys any type of shooting sport must join. I belong to more than the NRA because these dedicated people are watching our backs and protecting the future of shooting sports so our childern and theirs can enjoy these great sports and pastimes.
JOIN and support these organizations.

Don't agree with all their actions but they are the best voice we have and need our support. Strongly recommend you join in the effort to protect our basic rights . . .

While I'm a member, I'm not especially enamored of the organization. From time to time they endorse candidates that -- instead of getting voted into office -- should be burned at the stake. Still, they are the biggest and baddest gun lobby out there. Join. The magazine is worth the cost of your membership. Anything else is gravy.

Like others, I don't always agree with what they do, but they are "the name" that gets recognized and they do have a lot of lobbying influence. I joined both the NRA and GOA, liked what GOA stands for more than the NRA so I decided to become a GOA lifer first, then an NRA lifer.

They both have payment plans for life memberships, GOA at $50/quarter for the $500 total and NRA at $25/quarter for the $750 total. If you renew your yearly with the NRA early they'll cut you a $10 discount and send you a pretty good coupon book for gun stuff.

imo, joining the nra and voting are the two most important things you can do to protect the rkba!

ditto. (NRA's lobbying strategy is stupid, but you should still join)

I strongly urge any and all firearms owners to join the NRA and others. But as stated the NRA is the Big Wheel. THe muscle. Life member and all my daughters are life members. Wife a yearly member. Son a non member at this time paying for college.

Clout

Lots of pro gun organizations out there. Only one with the name NRA. Only one the antis constantly mention, only one gets the credit. The NRA.

Life member as are both of my boys.

Join and you will get lots of mail trying to scare you into sending money to fight this or that. Then you will get mail just begging money. Except for mag all mail will want money. They need to reduce their overhead and make sure 90% of money goes to fight gun control. But there like unions big fancy buildings, Big salaries, and do just enough to keep members beliving. I joined GOA.

X NRA member.

GOA

How many instructors has GOA trained this year? How many matchs have they sponsered? Who are they? How many members do they have? Why are they not mentioned in the news?

I am sure they are good people--just have no clout, no record, no money, etc.

I like all pro gun orgs. My money goes to the NRA, who have a track record.

Sending GOA money is like voting for a little sawed off hand grenade [with a bad haircut] from?? Ross somebody?? Wasted vote=wasted money.

The NRA is the best formal organization to be a part of if you are serious about defending the 2nd Amendment. I've been a Life member since about 1991 and I upgraded to Benefactor about 4 years ago.

I also try to plan a long 3-4 day weekend when the annual conventions are held. I missed this year's convention in Pittsburgh but I attended the ones that were held in Reno and Orlando. I plan to be at the next one in Houston next year; I hope George Bush shows up to finally give credit where it is due.

I've been an N.R.A. member since 1976. It's only about 10% effective as it would have me believe, but a.) it's at least 10% effective, and b.) there's no reason not to join both the N.R.A. and the G.O.A.

there's no reason not to join both the N.R.A. and the G.O.A.
Yup--even if the NRA has problems, every gun owner in America owes them a lot and if you think GOA can do a better job then join them too.

yep.

(and ideally, i'd never want NRA to spend 90% of their funds on anti-gun control. i'd much prefer them to spend their funds on training, education, stuff like whittingdon, and of course, matches and competitions. they really should leave lobbying to GOA who at least makes sense. join both.)

Lots of pro gun organizations out there. Only one with the name NRA. Only one the antis constantly mention, only one gets the credit. The NRA.

When you have four million members ready to vote, you can get their attention. Think if you had five or six or more. Even if you don't like everything they do, you should still join just for this reason.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that the NRA is always right. I wasn't too sure at first. Like the time they decided I couldn't be trusted with a machine gun. I wasn't entirely confident they were really on my side. But then I realized "What am I thinking? It's the NRA. They know what's best for me. The NRA is always right.".

Why is the roll eyes face smiling?

The NRA is the only gun lobby with the power to bring unconstitutional gun laws to the courts and have them overturned. The only problem is, they don't...and given how many times they've sabotaged efforts to do this, my money is going to GOA.
