Hello Friends,

I'm considering a hotrod 12 gauge project a-la-Mr. Hubel.

My search for 12ga heavy barrel stock has turned me on to Numrich part #587370, whose description reads:

"
Barrel Blank, Shotgun, Unchambered,Unturned-19-1/2'' Long,1.150'' O.D,Steel, Wht

12 Gauge Unchambered Shotgun Barrel Blank
Steel barrel, 19-1/2" long, in the white. Straight 1.150" O.D. and unchambered.

"

My question is--what sort of load can I push through this thing? The first task would be to chamber it for SAAMI 3.5" loads, but the ~3.75" 12 ga FH is tempting.

Any advice is appreciated. If I do choose to push the limits on this barrel, it will be on a strong action (perhaps a reinforced break action, falling block or bolt.) In addition, for testing loads I will employ a "remote fire" mechanism (read: LONG string tied to the trigger mechanism, action bolted to a big chunk of concrete.)

Thanks for your thoughts,

I sure couldn't answer that.

Since Numeric doesn't say what grade of "steel" the barrel is made from.

However, even a mild steel 1.150" dia barrel should be pretty strong.
At least stronger then any current shotgun hull I can think of.

I think hull failure & gas leakage into the action would be the weak link in the chain.
