The jilted boyfriend in a love triangle killed a couple and wounded their two children before being killed in a gunfight with police in Garden Grove, California.
49-year-old Thu Van Tran died at the scene yesterday after trading shots with officers who had tracked him to a home in Garden Grove, about 30 miles from Los Angeles, police Lt. Scott Hamilton said.
An officer was shot in the foot. He was treated at a hospital and released.
A semiautomatic handgun was found. Three other people were in the house during the shootout but were not harmed, Hamilton said.
The gunman had apparently been having an affair with 41-year-old Khiem Nguyen, while her husband, 42-year-old May Tran, was away, Hamilton said.
"There was kind of a love triangle," he said. "The husband had been out of town in Atlanta, Georgia, for six to eight months. He returned home this weekend" to discover she had a boyfriend.
The couple reconciled and decided to "give the boyfriend the boot," the lieutenant said.
The man went to the couple's home Tuesday and opened fire. Officers found the husband's body in the living room and the wife's in a bathroom, Hamilton said.
The couple's 14-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son were wounded. Both were treated at a hospital and expected to survive.
"It's just too much," said their uncle, Long Nguyen, wiping away tears. "What can we say? None of it makes sense."
