And here's the quote from atf.gov:

Q: May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity?

Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

Good timing. I've been meaning to research this for myself since
the time is coming soon when I need to do this.

Thanks to OP and others for information.

Don't take it personally. I think there's something in the water tonight. There seems to be a lot of short fuses. I for one was happy to track it and get the answer.

I kinda feel like the love of THR is lacking on this question. Sorry my post count isn't in the thousands.

Yikes! I hope you're not offended by a little visual gag. And it actually does show you how I found what I went and found for you.

If I hurt your feelings I deeply apologize. But you did get two factual answers in the first five replies. That's better than most folks can say! :D

You will have to follow all the laws of the state you're going to. Just the same as if you were traveling to that state.

islandphish you had a right to expect a civil answer to your question. If we only asked questions that had never been asked or discussed subjects that had never been discussed we would only check this site about once a month or less. If you don't think a post is worthy of a response just let someone else handle it.

Give a person a fish.....:p

Of course,

you cannot receive your own package if you are prohibited from possessing firearms. :neener:

While it is legal, I think you will find the "common carriers" require you to ship it to a FFL, their rules, not ATF's.

Since it is a rifle, take it to the post office. While you may have to argue with the postal employees down here in the lower 48, you will not have the same trouble mailing it back. It took me close to 30 minutes of arguing with the postmaster at the PO that I used in Texas.

I walked into a post office in Eagle River, AK to ship my rifle back to Texas with a stack of paperwork, figuring that I would have to explain the postal code and regulations to them. I told the lady working the counter that the box contained a rifle, and she merely said, "Well how much do you want to insure it for?" They ship a lot of guns and exotic items out of the POs up there.

If it were a handgun, then you would have fly up there with it. FEDEX and UPS will not allow you to ship to yourself. I have called and asked them on several occasions and read there tarrifs, the most recent being when I had to get several handguns back from Alaska. While you are not required to notify them that you are shipping it if it is going to an FFL, I believe you are obligated to notify them if it is going to someone other than an FFL. You will also not be able to ship to an FFL in AK, because you will not be able to receive a handgun from an AK FFL without residency.

You could try finding another contract carrier or get set up to ship through Alaska Airlines, but there is a lengthy TSA involved process to become a "known shipper".
