I just acquired a Ruger KP89DC and I am looking specifically for opinions on the early production models, manufactured around 1991 or so. I know Ruger used a P85 frame on the initial P89 pistols as they transitioned from the P85 to the P89, but any additional information would be appreciated regarding overall quality, durability, reliability or any other issues.

Thanks.

None that I'm aware of.

I've never gotten great accuracy with mine, but it's been very reliable. Based on my informal interviews with the owner of a large range in the area that rents guns they are very durable.

I have a P85 made around 1988. Bought it used from a police officer. I've put about 6500 rds through it. It's not a tack driver but at 7 to 10 yds it's more than adequate for self defence. The only auto I've ever had that hasn't jammed, failed to fire or eject in all those rounds, both factory and reloads. Maybe a bit bulky by some standards but absolutely reliable and I still carry it at times. I've shot a few P89s belonging to others at the range and really couldn't see much difference.

ROCK solid machine

Has distinct +/-'s:

VERY durable; very big and hefty
VERY reliable; don't like the ejection angle
VERY accurate*; rough trigger**

For a rock solid range or truck gun, the value can't be beat. Wouldn't ever try to CC one though. As to (functional) quality, durability, and reliability; it's up there with more expensive brands (ie GLOCK only has edge in size/weight/perhaps ergonomics etc); p89 even comes with some descent steel sights (>>GLOCK stock plastic).

Sorry, no information regarding specific date ranges, but whatever the year, I don't htink you can go wrong with a P89. Get back to us w/pics and range report, pronto!

*Could consistently get <3" groups with cci blazer aluminum no less, best groups (five shots from mid-mag) in 2" at 25 yards- MORE accurate than my G34 (slow fire from a rest), not as much action/game style shooting.
**As one who prefers "consistent" trigger type from 1st to last shot, I went with DAO version of the P89, which had (no joke) about a 25 pound trigger. The decocker model is much lighter, but still not great. Not smooth, lots of creep in SA.

Thanks for the feedback, guys...So far, it looks unanimous that it is a solid, solid piece of equipment. Reliability and durability are at the top of my list for must-haves in a firearm, or any other tool for that matter.

I have both the P85, and a brand new KP89D. I find the trigger is way better feeling on the P89. Haven't really shot it for groups yet, but the 200 rounds I did put through it seem to pretty much go where I point them.
