So the son and I went for deer in the Green Ridge State Forest in Maryland. He wanted to use the riffle he built...an AR in 6.5 grendel. Now in that part of Maryland it was buck-only. Doe come in at the end of the season, which is not this weekend, it's next weekend Dec 13 and 14. I took my Israeli Mauser in .308. We saw three deer, and only one provided a shot. It was a doe, so no shot taken.

Why is that here in the Black Powder portion of the forum? :scrutiny:

AH because where we live in Maryland the regulations are different, than in the Western part of the state at the State Forest..., here one can take either buck or doe. In fact one often takes doe and the limit on the number of doe is high. AND..., where we live it's shotgun or Black Powder Rifle, no modern rifles. So even though I suggested it before..., now he's wondering why we don't go for deer close by, where when he sees an adult buck or doe, he can harvest it. ;)

I gave him a TC New Englander last year in .54, and the companion 12 gauge barrel that goes with it. So Part A was to go out with his modern rifle, and deal with the restrictions...might've gotten a deer, but didn't....and now he's thinking maybe the Black Powder deer isn't such a bad idea...Part B is to get him a deer with that caplock ! God willing and his work schedule permitting...

Truth be told, it was more like...,
"Holy crap this is starting to work?"

Trying to get him to come to his own conclusion that instead of obtaining a specific tech, and then finding a place to use it,..., trying to get him to see the problem first, and find the tech application that solves it. I mean where we were was very nice deer country, but really..., more like a .44 mag lever action situation, or even a .54 muzzleloader situation than a long range rifle. Mostly thick brush and shots at 50 yards or less. Throw in the bag limit restrictions, and not the best choice for a first hunt...but he had to use his rifle. Stubborn kid...I wonder where he gets that from? o_O

Guile! I like guile. Hope your sneakiness pays off. Think of his expanded world of hunting: a better chance for venison, maybe autumn squirrels with the shotgun barrel on the New Englander, perhaps (gasp!) a flintlock for future deer.

Sounds like y'all have it good being able to shoot buck or doe all season with a muzzleloader. In my area, that's for archers and not all of us are that good with a bow.

Yes the unintended consequence of liberals and anti-hunting mentality (PETA was based in my county for a long time), is that we have had an exploding deer population in central Maryland, and it's funny how the rich lefties love the deer, until they are paying thousands of dollars for landscape repair, or dealing with a destroyed car or both, as the deer are feeding off their properties and wandering across roadways. OH and they all wanted tax payers to pay for "deer birth control" implants, because of the booming deer population. Luckily the State said "Naw"...and decided that hunters with guns = deer birth control.
