Hey all,

Does anyone know of places to shoot in the Seattle area?
Roughly within 100 miles or so.
There are plenty of ranges but id rather not shoot there, too close proximity of other shooters I don't know, and the range fees are more than I want to pay.

Currently in Snohomish county, usually go to Sultan to the "famous spot" but it has since been closed down and it is illegal to shoot at all there.

Last minute ideas, trying to get some friends together tomorrow if possible.

If you dont want to post it in this thread, feel free to pm me.

Thank you very much in advance, I appreciate it.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind finding another place too. It was a mess when I went a range today. Plus I'd much rather shoot outside if I could.

Which ranges do you not want to shoot at so people won't repeat them? I go to Greenwater now and then. It's about 10 miles east of Enumclaw on highway 410.

I've since lost my GPS coordinates, but some of those small service roads going up the terrain end up at gravel pits and have been used as shooting ranges informally (you can see where some people didn't pick up their brass). The views are great up on the hills too, really refreshing.

I was at the Tacoma Sportsman's Club today, $10 fee now, public outdoor with $70 membership I believe. I've been considering the Cascade Rifle and Pistol range after talking to Dan Riley. I really want to try out that 600 yard range. I really hate driving distances over 20 miles though, call me lazy.

This was the PM referring to Greenwater:

Its just open land that is legal to shoot last I was there (about 3 months ago). There were no signs that I saw stating otherwise and lots of people have shot there (old brass that didn't get picked up, etc). As long as you shoot into the hills, I see no problem. I hope you can find a few spots, we had to explore around a bit and I lost my GPS markers.

I would be interested in places to shoot, that are not ranges, but open areas, be they national parks or otherwise.
Thanks

Many confuse National Forests with National Parks.

The former usually permits hunting (in season, with proper license) and tolerates target shooting. Distance to campgrounds, cleaning up, etc. are important factors in whether or not Forest Service law enforcement types post an area "No Shooting".

The latter is about as anti-gun as you can get. (Current regulations permitting CCW consistent with state law notwithstanding -- these have been suspended pending environmental impact studies.)

Check a map. Except for Mount Rainier and other National Parks (or National Monuments), most of the Cascade Range is National Forest.

For the "range option", Capitol City Rifle & Pistol Club is just south of Olympia and it has quite a few different ranges for different interests. They are rabid about gun safety, and they don't allow shooting at targets on the ground, reactive targets, glass, or a lot of other stuff commonly used as targets in a gravel pit. Longest range is 200 yds (with steel gongs) and they also have an action pistol range.

Thanks for the clarification, I did not know that.
Also appreciate the info.

Everett Sportsman's Club range has 25, 50, & 100 yd targets with covered benches. Open Friday, Saturday, & Sunday noon til 4pm in Winter & noon til 5pm during DST. Public shooters are charged $10/day during the winter schedule & $15/day during DST schedule. Can shoot as many guns as you bring, but only one allowed on firing line at a time. If you can get there on a Friday it's normally pretty quiet, & only gets overly busy during Hunter Sight-in periods in late summer.

1) There is an informal outdoor range off the Tinkham Rd exit of I-90 about mp 42 or so. It is on NFS land and open to the public.

2) At Northwestfirearms.com, there is a sub-forum dedicated to just this topic. For those hunting for advice like this, I'd suggest using that regional forum as it will give more "local" knowledge.

Happy outdoor shooting!

I go to the outdoor range in Issaquah. There are pistol and rifle lanes, but it only goes out to 100 yards.

If you go across the water to Kitsap County, they have one in Poulsbo and one in Seabeck.

There's a great place to shoot just outside a little town not too far from Monroe.... in an area that used to resemble the Wild West on weekends. Any of you locals will know the *area* I'm talking about. DNR has approved shooting in ONE particular place that's actually a great spot. You can shoot 100 yards anytime and if you get there and setup first on a weekday 150 yards is possible. I shoot there weekly. In fact I was there yesterday. We keep the place clean so it stays open. I am not going to put the exact location out on a public forum because I want it to stay open! The last thing we need is every TV-shooting, garbage dumping POS ruining a fantastic place to shoot. That's what killed all the previous places to shoot in the NW. If you want to know where it is PM me and I'll send you directions and/or a Google map so long as you don't post it on a public forum. I trust HighRoaders to take the High Road and not mess up the last great place to shoot in the NW. Everybody else, not so much. :banghead:

I've had mixed luck at the Kenmore Range. The prices are very reasonable and they stock plenty of ammo, but the guy typically at the rifle range is a jerk. Don't get me wrong, he's very safety conscious, but target changes happen once every whenever he wakes up from a nap. I've arrived and waited an hour and a half for a change. I've seen someone else arrive so it was the two of us, stopped shooting, let him know that all weapons were clear and we were ready for a target change at the next opportunity, and stood outside the range office for half an hour staring at him before he let the new guy shoot. It's ridiculous, which is a shame since it's so close to me.

Wade's in Bellevue is a great indoor range. The lanes are short and they only accept pistol-caliber ammo, but the staff is very helpful and friendly, plus there's a great shop on hand with a gunsmith. They will generally have ammo when everyone else is out. And you can rent weapons! Hard to go wrong at Wade's.

I really enjoy the Gig Harbor Sportsmen's Club. It's a two hour drive for me, give or take traffic, so I just do it once a week. They run competitions on Sundays and Tuesdays, have great hours, a fantastic staff of volunteers who, if they have time, are eager to help. Target changes are frequent, and the prices are rock bottom. I have nothing but good things to say about these guys. I just wish I were closer to them. All my spare money would get dumped into ammo.

When I was in WA last year, I stayed in Discovery Bay and found a huge range in Port Angeles. It had skeet an a whole training area...plus dog training. It had a small lake and everything.

Snohomish County is supposed to be developing a new range off the Sultan Basin Road. Last meeting I attended about it (last summer) it was said that construction was supposed to start sometime in '09.
I emailed the Snohomish County Parks Department late yesterday to get an update on it but have not heard back from then yet. They are the ones who are going to run it. It's supposed to have a public range including pistol, shotgun, rifle to 600 yds!?!?, and a "private" LEO range. It all sounded pretty encouraging at that meeting with Snohomish County Sheriff Lovick, Chief Green, Sen. Val Stevens and others in attendance and all in favor of it. Final transfer of the land from DNR was all they were waiting for last I heard. I'll pass on any further info if and when I get it from Snohomish County.
