Golden State Arms was in the business (aside from their retail front) of refurb'ing MilSurps and reselling them. Their main stock-of-trade was based on the Enfield No1Mk3 and No4Mk1, but that's not what's in the pic. It looks like a Mauser 98 sporter, but it's hard to tell from the floorplate view. :)

More pics of it

It is in very bad shape here is 3 more pics.
Alot of rust and dirt and even a few cob webs
Thanks
John

Bad shape? Yeah, I'll go along with that. :)

Easiest is to take the barrelled action to the nearest gunshop with the and ask...

Did you say you're in SW Austin? Red's at Oak Hill...

Actually, it doesn't look THAT bad. It looks like a basic sporterized (drilled and tapped) M98. I presume from the fact that its chambered in 30-06 that it's a standard/long receiver Mauser (and not one of the Mexican/Yugo intermediate length actions). Heck, this is how my last two hunting rifles looked when I first got 'em. :D

The stock is obviously a loss, but you might could sell the receiver/barrel to someone looking for a project. 'Round here, a fixer-upper M98 receiver goes for around $50-$60. PM me if y'all might want to sell it - I'm just up the road in the DFW Metroplex.

Bolt Help

I know I need to depress the spring and then turn the top part 1/4 turn but it will not turn at all I depress the spring but it will not turn for me. How can I do it?

Done (well some what)

It took about 4 hrs to take it apart the bolt was so rusted it would not move but I got it. Now I am going to let it sit overnight with oil all over it. Where is the best place for me to get a stock for it I would like to get the one that was on it when it was made. I will be taking it to Hanks to get reblued next week.
thanks for your help>

I'd have that Mauser checked out very carefully by a good gunsmith before shooting it.

I've heard of Santa Fe before- I think they made imitation or cloned '03 springfield type rifles that were or are basicly junk with a poorly made and weak receiver. That might be a real mauser recievr they built a sporter out of, but have it checked over as their reputaion as a gun maker isn't very high.

Golden State Arms was a surplus dealer first, and they put sporters together from surplus rifles with missing, or damaged stocks, barrels, parts etc. Some were good, some weren't so good. Like CB said above, it'd be a good idea to have headspace, etc checked.

On a side note, their main store on, IIRC, 500 Green St. Pasadena, CA, seemed like a whole city block of surplus arms in the arsenal crates, just stacked on the floors.

Try to imagine acres of cases of 03's, 03A1's(one of which I later bought), 03A3's, 03A4's, M1's, M1C's, and M1D's, the last two selling for $35-50 each depending on condition(I still have a catalog). :uhoh: :D

Every mark of SMLE you could imagine, by the case. Swedish Mausers of every description(I bought a mod 94 Swedish carbine as my first centerfire rifle for $10-15 bucks).

Bofors, and Oerlikon anti aircraft guns for sale, with ammo(20 & 40mm), Finnish Lahti 20mm anti tank semi auto rifles, with the ski bipod, with ammo, cases of them. And, tons more!!
All for sale to the public.

To a kid in the 50's, it was like walking into the garden of eden. :D ;)

Golden state?

Are they still around and if they are do you have an e-mail addy or a phone # for them I spent about 2 hrs today looking for it online but could not find anything about it. I am going this week to Hanks and have him check it out Then I will go from there and do what needs to be done. So far it has been fun breaking it down. I may just have to get a few more when I am done with this one.
Thanks for all of the help.

John, unfortunately, they closed down in the late 60's, early 70's, don't remember exactly. It probably started getting hard for them after GCA68, especially with the cannons.

I'm just glad I had the opportunity to go in there as a child.

To think, that's about 5 minutes away from me. :(

Update if y'all want to know

The 1st pic is when I got it the 2nd is about 15 to 16 hrs of work (fun work if you can call it work) still not done with the bolt and have not started with the rest of it yet.

Nice job! Just be sure not to remove any metal from the rear(towards the bolt handle) of the lugs, including the one by the bolt handle.
That can cause excess headspace(not a good thing).

Update

Well I lose track on how long I worked on it ( how many hrs) but it is getting there alot of the blueing is off. But it is getting real hard to get the rest of it off. I have been useing " Birchwood Casey Blue & Rust Remover" Any help would be nice.
Thanks
John

I've found that eBay is always a decent source for this sort of stuff. I also have several (both stamped and milled) if you want one of 'em.

Update

Just got the rifle parts back looking better, now I have to find a good stock for it.

HA! FINALLY someone somewhere has a thread on these rifles...

HI btw, i just joined up here so i could talk about my model 1947 santa fe....

for the record mine is 30-06, bought in 1950 from a sears catalog by my grandfather lol sears... anyways, my bolt is in, sry to say this, MUCH better shape than your newly accuired one. i've been looking at that link about dissam/reassembling of the mouser bolt... my bolt looks exactly like it except my safety lever is on the left side of the bolt not the right as in the picture... does that mean mine isnt a mouser???

anyone figure out where to get a stock for these remakes? or is custom gonna be a better way to go with stocks....
