I was thinking about getting a ported barrel and a slide for my Glock 23. I shot a Glock 21 at the range which had a both a ported barrel and slide and it felt great. However, I know very little about the concept of porting the barrel/slide except for the fact that it reduces recoil. Anyone know the pros and cons or have any experience with this?

Maybe the reason the 21 felt so comfortable is because it's a naturally softer shooting caliber in a bigger, wider gun, and not so much the porting.
I shot a ported 19 and it felt little different than my 19. I don't think a ported 23 will feel as soft as you want it to. Also the muzzle blast will get stronger, which won't help anything.
Other more practical options IMO would be a 9mm conversion barrel for practice, a used 19 to complement your 23, switching to a 30 or 36, or take up handloading so you can roll your own softer recoiling practice ammo.

I have a buddy who just got a Glock 22C and loves his. I shot a Glock 23 for a while and liked it, liked the 22 (regular) a little more but I don't care for the 22C. My friend on the other hand shot my 23, didn't like it, shot the 22 and liked it but then shot the 22C and loved it, it will be a matter of preference and is completely subjective.

Pros - recoil and muzzle flip will feel different
Cons - gun gets a little dirtier

Porting works best for high pressure cartridges. you won't notice any difference in 45 acp or 9mm. That's just physics

I owned a Gen2 Glock 23C and I liked it. It definately had less muzzle flip, but was louder. I shot it at night and the flash through the ports was really bad with cheap ammo, but almost nonexistent with Gold Dots. I sold it, and then later ended up with another 23. In hindsight, I would have kept the 23c and then just bought a non ported barrel and have the best of both.

I don't like ported or compensated guns of any kind. I tend to want my blast and debris to more or less follow the bullet down range. But, as is the usual case ... YMMV.

I have a G23 with a 4.9" LWD ported bbl. as my range choice. It shoots great and isn't anymore dirty than the OEM bbl.. The G22c I traded was filthy. The inside of the slide would collect loads of crap after 25 rounds. The front sight would get black from the blast residue. It shot fine but the flash was blinding and revealing at night. Oh yea, the boom was much louder with the 22c than the ported LWD bbl. JMHO and experience.

BTW: my G23 is probably my favorite shooter in my collection. Oh course, I've installed the 3.5# trigger connector which lightened/smoothed the pull and decreased the reach slightly.

I've had three pistols Mag-Na-Ported. A S&W 629 in .44mag, a Ruger Redhawk in .44mag, and most recently a Kahr PM40 in .40 S&W.

In each case the porting improved my ability to control the muzzle/point of aim more easily and also in each case improved my comfort in shooting those weapons. The .44 mags had less muzzle rise and the .40 had a reduced "snap" in the recoil experience that made it much more comfortable to shoot.

I've no experience with Glocks, but can't imagine they react any different to porting than other weapons.

As far as cleaning; not an issue in my opinion. Just a few additional moments with a pipe cleaner and everything is spick and span again.
