The family and I heading to the Oregon Zoo, is this going to be a legal place to conceal carry. I don't know if this is private or public I have an email to the zoo but they haven't got back to me yet.

yep. Even more specifically for CCW holders:

166.173 Authority of city or county to regulate possession of loaded firearms in public places. (1) A city or county may adopt ordinances to regulate, restrict or prohibit the possession of loaded firearms in public places as defined in ORS 161.015.

(2) Ordinances adopted under subsection (1) of this section do not apply to or affect:

(a) A law enforcement officer in the performance of official duty.

(b) A member of the military in the performance of official duty.

(c) A person licensed to carry a concealed handgun.
(d) A person authorized to possess a loaded firearm while in or on a public building or court facility under ORS 166.370.

$500 fine? Ouch.

Just to rub a little salt in your wounds:

When my wife and I took our son to the local zoo a few months ago, I checked for signs on my way in and saw none so I carried. Once inside, I noticed another guy with his family looking at the lemurs who was open carrying a nice new Kimber.:D

Thanks for the link, I do have my CHL but I can't carry? What does ran by Metro mean part of the City maybe. I don't see where the City has a ban on concealed carry, so if it is run by the city this is where I get confused. It say's member of the public does that exclude CHL carries. Does Oregon have a designated sign for No Guns? I have had my CHL for awhile but just recently starting carring at all times with this comes alot of questions and not alot of answers.

Thanks to Lonnie's posting and the state law, I wouldn't worry one bit about that fine, they cannot impose it. But it may take an appeal to a state court to settle it, unfortunately.

It's a metro (which means city...) ordinance that applies specifically to the zoo, which apparantly, according to state law is an unenforceable ordinance.

Boiled down, you have every legal right to carry your concealed weapon. If, by some bit of bad luck, it is exposed and the management wets its collective panties, they will probably call the police who will disarm you, cuff you and arrest you. Later, in court, the charges will be dismissed but you will get to spend awhile with the dregs of Portland society and you won't get an apology. You might not get your gun back either.

Don't ask me how I know this.

For those of you who don't know; Metro (note capital M) is a tri county quasi-governmental agency that administers the Convention center, the Expo center, the mass transit (Max and Metro bus service) the garbage collection, the Portland Zoo, etc.

Does that change the carry factor, it is still publicly funded. You would think after the block party the city put on they would be a little shy about pushing the issue two far. I talked to a retired law enforcement officer from the Metro area and he said from a cop stand point you would be arrested and gun conficated. It is pretty tough you want to be comfortable with carring your gun, yet they make you feel like your the outlaw.

AFAIK only courthouses, sheriff/LE offices, and post offices are off limits. A lot of companies, schools, and orgs think they can supercede state law and put up some sort of sign, but it's not enforceable. You can be asked to leave and arrested for trespassing if you don't.
Now, you very well could get hassled by the cops, a lot of whom don't know the law either. I wouldn't go open carrying anywhere in the metro area for that reason.
Some info for Oregon http://www.oregonfirearms.org/faq/

I've open carried multiple times in downtown Portland, and indeed, watching GLBT Pride in June of last year, and in the fairgrounds area for the parade (despite being unlawfully ejected out of PUBLIC property near the end of my visit there by rent a cops). I was not however contacted by Portland Police Bureau or by the Multnomah County Sheriffs Office.

I went to the zoo anyhow and I didn't see any signs that said no guns, is there a law in oregon about a designated no guns signs. I was also told that if I did carry somwhere like the zoo where there policy is no guns and some how my concealed carry showed I could get my CHL revoked is this true.

I don't know about no guns posting requirements. If you go somewhere that is merely posted no guns, or has a no guns policy, unless it is a place which is specifically prohibited by law, such as the secured area of an airport or jail, no you cannot have you CHL revoked or suspended. The most they can do is ask you to leave and possibly not return under threat of trespass.

As stated earlier, though, they have no authority by state law to prohibit concealed carry by permit holders at the Oregon Zoo anyway.

No, Oregon doesn't have any signs that carry any type of legal weight (like the 30.06 signs in another state). They can post it in 50' tall letters and all they can do is ask you to leave if you are made (and have you arrested for trespassing if you refuse to leave).
ETA: Not sure if this is official or not, but when I took my CHL class the officer teaching it said if your gun is spotted and you get the police called about it 3 times, your CHL can be revoked, but I haven't seen any other info on that so it may be false.

Can you PM me or notify me of the details of where, when, and the most important, WHO told you that? If it's the Multnomah County class that particular officer has been corrected, assuming that this class hasn't been taken since last year.

Sadly, Portland and the surrounding area have a long history of ignoring state premtion law, and doing as they please. Lonnie Wilson, and the OFF, have done A LOT at getting them corrected, slapped, retrained, etc, and from what I hear, things are MUCH better, but they still do their own thing a lot.

As to revoking your permit, they can try, but will lose in court. You cant revoke an OR permit on a person who has broken no laws. that simple. Doesnt mean someone wont try though. All this is one of many reasons I dont go to Portland. Even ultra-hippie-liberal Eugene seems to have more sense. Eugene doesnt even have a law against OC for non-permit holders like some cities, and OC doesnt seem to cause any issues either. Just last weekend I OC'd my revolver while shopping in the Walmart in suburban Eugene, and no one even seemd to notice. Not the first time either.:D

That's the worst part, they'll still hassle you and figure most people will decide it's not worth the time and money to fight it in court. I appreciate what the OFF is doing. It'll probably take a few court battles for everyone to realize the PDs don't have a leg to stand on with enforcing these rules that are contrary to the Oregon state constitution.

Nothing like bumping an ancient thread. Have there been any changes for Oregon CHL holders in the past six years regarding concealed carry at the Zoo or on other Portland Metro property?

Pittsburgh PA zoo/Kennywood....

When I was a kid, I went to the big Pittsburgh Zoo often. I don't recall any signs or posters saying no weapons but that may have changed since the early 1980s. ;)

I do know Kennywood, the large theme park in metro Pittsburgh is very strict about no guns or weapons but that is mainly to avoid street gangs & thugs.

As noted, if you conceal a firearm, be discreet & use common sense. You do not need to be a NRA poster child or seek out every CCW.

It appears the Zoo is fine to carry now:

I linked to the OFF information link and read thru it. Good information! One recommendation. DO NOT INFORM POLICE THAT YOU ARE CARRIEING A GUN, UNLESS ASKED! LIKE WAS STATED IN LINK! THEY CAN GET VERY HOSTILE ABOUT IT & YOU DO NOT HAVE TO INFORM THEM UNLESS ASKED! DON'T THINK ABOUT COURTESY! AS THEY DON'T! IF THEY DON'T SEE IT, THATS THEIR PROBLEM! NEVER ASSUME THEY WILL APPRECIATE OR CARE! THAT'S NOT THEIR JOB! AS I HAVE BEEN REMINDED! OREGON GUN OWNERS SHOULD BOOKMARK THE OFF LINK! Thanks for posting it!
