Progression from AR to AK

An annoying acronym that speaks of the inevitable final assault by robot ninja zombie bears.

Hakim/Ljungman are direct impingement, as is the Rasheid and the MAS 49 & 49/56.

Of these, I owned the MAS 49/56 and Hakim. My Hakim was not nearly as accurate as my piston-driven Garand. My MAS was accurate, but not as good as the Garand, either.

My own personal track has gone (somewhat):

Mini-14 - M1 - SKS - (and lately)-AK

I LIKE the AR and was trained on the platform--but I've never been able grasp the advantage for me personally. If I need the accuracy past 200m, I won't want an AR--I'd want a Garand I guess.

The M-1 is my hands down favorite rifle to shoot--but the 'cheapie' Yugo SKS's got me into the realm of Commie-bloc hardware.

Of late, a pal's WASR-2 has brought me into the interest in the AK and I'm now waiting on my first 7.62 x 39 AK (a cheapie WASR 10/63 from AIM).

In truth, I'd been arrogant and never LOOKED at the AK design until one--literally--fell into my lap.

Loads of fun, and frankly, in my price range. Also, like the SKS's, not something I'll have to 'baby' in terms of care. Light enough for my wife to handle if needed (not that there is ANYTHING she can't handle!), and on par with the mini for close-in accuracy and reliability.

The AN-94 superceded the AK design.
Military groups continue to use the AK rifle system strictly based on economics

Thats not true. The AN-94 program was disbanded due to reliability, compatibility, ergonomic, and economic disparitys. It has been shelved in favor of future development of the AEK-971 series. In others words it (the AN-94) didn't work right enough of the time.

The AN94 was shelved in favor of the AEK. The AEK needs some ergonomic improvements as well, judging by looks. But, holy crap...the AN was fugly.

Milled receiver AK's have the same accuracy as stamped. Of course, in stamped AK's, the lockup is in a milled trunion. And, as you say, the bullet is already long gone, then what possible difference can there be in receiver construction?

Lock up in the trunion of an AK isn't fundamentally any different than the lock up of the AR bolt in the barrel extension.

Accuracy is all about repeatability. If there is any flexibility in the locking mechanism, the cartridge may not be in exactly the same place (headspace) or angle relative to bore with each shot. So receiver flexibility does matter, even though the bullet is gone before the bolt starts moving.

I agree that lockup in an AK trunion is extremely similar to an AR's barrel extension, but any flex in the overall receiver could affect the path of the bolt carrier and that could affect the angle at which the bolt locks up. The AKM's stamped receiver does not to me look anywhere near as stiff as an AR's forged tubular upper receiver. But I am just speculating here.

Never owned an AR. I learned that they are a little queeny from the army. I have an AK that I love though. I agree the AR has better ergonomics and it's modabilty is out of box superior. However the AK is simply a better combat rifle. Cheaper too. I hate unreliable things. I bought a GMC Sonoma and it sucked. Now I have a Kia. I have had my M16s and M4s malfunction so many times... And that was in the army so you can't say that they were not clean. My AK had a failure to eject a few days ago though. Now I don't know what I'm gonna do.

I'm still partial to my AK but I was messing around last night after reading all these posts in this thread and I made an AR Molon Labe Oval like the AK ones I have for sale.

While I was designing the decal and tracing an the image to make the silhouette of the AR, I realized why I liked them in the first place. They do look cool. Then I started looking through AR photo threads.... That is always a mistake.

A buddy and myself have been toying around with picking up ARs again and keeping the AKs. Just so we have something in .223 we can shoot coyote with and share ammo with my brother who is an AR guy.

I love both platforms...

I expect better accuracy from my AR's.

I expect less cleaning on my AK.

I expect to pay a little more to feed my AR.

I expect my AK to function with any ammo.

I expect my AR to put a smile on a new shooters face.

I expect my AK to put fear in the anti's mind.

I expect my AR to need a little extra love and care.

I expect my AK to get a beating every once and a while.

Either way I love both platforms.

Attention to everyone who has posted in this thread before this post 89 (this post).
Pm me with shipping info if you would like a free SpentCasings.com "Two Arms" decal, inspired by this thread.

Because of this thread and the debate it has spawned between my brother and I, We are going to be doing an unofficial shootout/review between an AR and an AK.

Not that this has not been done before but we will try to put our own spin on it.

4 shooters
2 rifles
0 Bias

All in good fun.

It's not likely that we will come to any solid conclusion as to which is "better" but we will surely enjoy ourselves, and it is an excuse to shoot.

So PM me your address if you want a free Two Arms decal.

My first "fighting rifle" was a yugoslavian SKS, from there I bought a WASR 10.
I had no issues with either rifle (other than accuracy). I bought a bushmaster M4 flat top and have never looked back. I clean my weapons enough to where I don't need to depend on the AK's rugged reliability. If you treat a properly built AR-15 (from a good manufacturer) the way it needs to be treated you will have minimal issues, if any.

My two "go to guns" now are the Bushmaster and an AK-74.

I love and respect the 47, but it's design is very limited. The 74 offers more accuracy, less recoil, and is still reliable.

I went from an AK (Yugo M70) to an AR Carbine. I have loads of respect for the AK, but I just can't get into a comfortable, natural, repeatable firing position for them, no matter what I try. I always feel like I need to visit the Chiropractor after shooting AKs. Not so ARs, they just work for me. And that's all that matters: what works for you. I like New Balance sneakers, you might like Nike. So what, big whoop ;) . And for the record, at the range I have seen proportionally about the same number of hiccups, AK vs AR. None required tools, most were probably mag or ammo related.

As a side note, I much prefer shooting an SKS to an AK. Way more fun to me, because for me shooting an AK is literally a pain in my neck  .
