I'm looking for the "best" proven load for the Super Blackhawk 10" 44 mag. for "general" hunting purposes,ie: whitetail, hogs etc. out to 100 yards. I know this is a "loaded" question(no pun intended), but just looking for some good experiences, so I can start somewhere.

Just my chosen load for a 7 1/2" Blackhawk and a Winchester Trapper rifle:
240 gr. Hornady XTP-HP col 1.600"
CCI 350 Primers
I've tested RP, Win, and FC cases with this load
Winchester 296 powder--23 to 23.3 grains- velocity 1640-1670 fps in 16" Trapper rifle. Shoots good in both pistol and rifle. No pressure signs even up to 24 grains which gets 1711-1725fps in the 16" barrel. XTP's are supposed to be a good hunting bullet however I don't hunt with them. Don't reduce Win 296 powder charges too much. I wouldn't go lower than 22 grains for safety and a magnum primer is needed.

In my silhouette days I used Sierra 240 JHPs, CCI 350 primers and 23.0 of H110. Good for 1390 average. Shot a lot of 40X40s. With a stable position, I would be comfortable out to 200 meters on deer sized critters...if I were still shooting the .44.

This is from memory, so double check the numbers.

I have literally shot thousands of rounds, maybe tens of thousands or rounds with 17.5 grains 2400 or 22.0 grain 2400 with a Lead 240 or 250 bullet.

What load I shoot really depends on the recoil and blast I am willing to withstand. The 22.0 grain load is Elmer Keith's original load, and the loads below were using Elmer Keith's Lyman bullet, 429421.

Back when I chronographed this data, I was using a single stage press and little dandy powder measure. Now that I am using a Dillon 550B, I get the average of ten throws.

My load for the 240 gr Jacketed bullets have always been 24.0 gr. of WW296 or H110. This is the basic load for many. I shoot this load in my Super Blackhawk, T/C Contender, Competitor pistol, and Marlin rifle...

My early handgun experience saw the 357 Mag and then the upgrade to the 44 Mag. I chose the J.P. Sauer and Sohn under the Hawes brand, and with their extended grips, found that they were much more comfortable to shoot than the Ruger SBH. And I shot it a lot, and I cast my own bullets for plinking using Unique and developed my hunting load of 22gr of 2400 under the Sierra 180gr JHP. It was very accurate and I did take a deer with that load, 1 shot pass through that jellied the lungs and it ran 30yds. I liked the higher velocity of the lighter bullets within the range of the iron sights.

Yep. I use this load with Speer JSP's in my Ruger SBH and Ruger 77/44.

SBH Loads for hunting

thanks so much for the info on the different loads, I now have a "starting" point I'm comfortable with-thanks again all.
