So my wife is due to have our first kid on Dec. 30. I have been thinking for the last year or so that it would be awesome to give my first child a rifle on the day he/she is born.

I was going to get a simple single shot .22lr (the "cricket"). However, I am having second thoughts. The cricket is all plastic and cheap. Also, while it would be good to practice on, my kid will soon be graduated to other firearms. I have been looking around a bit and found a really awesome over/under .410/.22lr made by Remington International (https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/14172). I cant seem to find anything on Remington International on the net so I figured one of you would know a little about it. I would really just like to know if these are made in the US and if they are decent quality.

Any suggestions on other rifles would be appreciated as well. I think something in .22 or .410 would be best and either single shot or possibly a bolt action.

Now I just hope my kid likes shooting.....:uhoh:

I would suggest a simple, quality 22 bolt rifle rather than something weird like a combo gun. My first gun was a Remington Model 581 and I think something similar would be perfect.

I think the CZ 452 is also a really cool rifle.

CZ, Savage, and Marlin all make nice bolt rifles in .22LR.

CZ even makes a kid-size rifle.

My grandfather gave me a gun on the day I was born. A new in box Winchester Model 70 30'06 Deluxe Sporter. It is the most beautiful gun I own. It is still in the box, unfired 30 years later and one day I hope to give it to my first grandkid when he/she is born.

You'll end up buying your kid .22's, 20 gauges, first deer rifles, etc. when they become ready. Why not buy a family heirloom they will be proud of forever?

Would you consider a used gun?

If I were in your shoes I would want something from a time when guns were made in America to a much higher standard.

Maybe consider a nice Savage 24 which are most commonly available as a 22 over 410 and can be purchased in excellent condition for around $400. In 50 years the gun would be 100 and probably still in exceelent ccondition if well cared for.

The Remington International is a Russian gun made by Baikal IIRC, others may know better..

Generally, .410s are full choke, which makes them more suited to an expert than to a beginner.

If the price isn't too big a hickey, the Browning .22 semi-auto is a nice little .22 rifle. You can't cut the stock down, though, for a little guy.

If you plan to start him early, weight is a consideration as well as length of pull. I'd suggest a "clip fed" type, rather than tube mag. (Somehow, the magazine for a .22 rifle just doesn't seem righteous for calling it a box magazine. :)) For a beginner, I strongly prefer a bolt-action over a semi-auto.
