rear sight elevators for 1892 - do they come in various heights?

I was trying to sight in a Puma 1892, a gift for my brother, and the rear sight elevator would not go high enough. I had a higher front post installed because the factory post was too low, but apparently I overdid it.

I have travelled across the country to give it to him (and tried to sight it at a range along the way), so now I am far from home with an unsightable rifle and have a couple of days to make it right before I give it to him. The easiest thing would be to get a higher rear sight elevator since I cannot access my tools or usual gunsmith.

Are there different heights of elevators? I would normally just file down the front post, but it has a bead on it, so i would have to replace the whole thing, which I am not set up to do.

Any advice?

There are quite a few elevators made, and another one that is higher may fit the rifle. The problem is that they are different thicknesses and lengths, so they may require some fitting to work.

You are in the same boat that I was with my Puma - you just couldn't crank that thing up high enough. I played around with things and really came to 2 different conclusions: A) Get a good rear sight with new front sight or B) Jump to a good receiver sight with new front sight. Given my ability to use iron sights, I decided to go the receiver sight (williams) with new front sight post. Had I gone with a new rear/front sight, I would have used Marbles - they are great sights and with a new front blade, you won't have to crank your rear sight up so high.
Despite the sights, the Puma's are great guns! Hope you enjoy yours.

I tried to put an XS ghost ring on, but the gunsmith wouldn't tap the holes. He was afraid of blowing out the side of the receiver because of the chamfer on the edges. I was a bit surprised at that.

I sent my Puma to him, but opted for the Williams sight. I have it on other rifles and it is familar to me. I can always unscrew the apeture and have a ghost ring if the light is too low.

I think that using a peep sight is good practice for us all - it amazes me that I can shoot "so much" better with a peep than standard sights. Chalk it up to another lost art of Americana.
