Reloading for the PSL/Romak 3 (7.62x54R)

Hey all,

Anyone out there have experience reloading 7.62x54R for their Romak? I just ordered the Lee Pacesetter 3-die Set and Sierra Pro-Hunter 150gr .311 (after I slugged the bore to make sure it was .313" grove dia), I also ordered the larger diameter expander button to handle .311-.312 bullets. The only other reloader I know in person that reloads for this caliber uses Reloader15 powder and CCI primers, so that is what I was planning on getting

If you have any suggestions on other powder/bullets/primers/brass etc or any advice in general on reloading in this caliber for the Romak, I'd appreciate it.

Hmm. Nada? I loaded up some Sierra ProHunter 150gr .311" with 47gr Re15. We'll see how that works

where did you order your dies, expander button and bullets from?

First, you need to slug your bore to know if it requires .308 bullets or .311-.312 bullets. Usually, the Russian Mosin Nagants are 0.311 to 0.314 and will use the 303 British (0.311-0.312) bullets.

That would be correct. If you can't wait on the expander from Lee, do what I did and spend a couple extra bucks to buy the Lee 303 British FL Sizing die from your local gun shop and pull the expander out of it.

I have loading data for 7.62x54R for you. I am using the Hornady 3120 which is a 150 gr. 312 diameter soft point. Where did find boxer primmed brass? If you can send me your email, I'll send you the loading data.

Remember this is not a Mosin-Nagant and cannot tolerate a steady diet of heavy ball like a Mosin. Stick near the 148 light ball BT round and you should have best results. There isn't much need to slug the bore on a PSL either.

Not too long ago Natchez Shooters had 7.62X54 Olympic ammo that was priced at $4.25 a box of 20. I bought a couple cases of it and reload these now. If there are more out there they may be cheaper than buying new brass. I load for a Mosin unfortunately so cant help with load data.

Yes I loaded for an ungrateful PSL-54C. It ejected brass so violently that it pretty much tore it up by denting the cases and bending the rims. Don't expect to get a chance to reload the brass more than a couple of times if yours does the same thing.
