Given the price of slugs in these days I was wondering if anybody has any experience reloading shotgun slugs. We’re you successful or did it turn out to be more trouble than it’s worth?

I have been loading 1 oz 'Key Drive' slugs from the Lee mold. I have been staying 10-15% lower than the specified load with good results (I have sent 30+ test loads at full load for pressure testing with Steve Armbrust and am awaiting results). Federal Gold medal hulls with Claybuster wads using Herco, AA#5, and HS-6. Lead was sourced from local tire shops, and scrapyard.

Generally, I'm estimating approximately .50-.60 per shell.

Yup, and they do really well. I use the Lee 1oz KeyDrive as well. I load in the appropriate hull and wad combo and use a 1oz of shot powder equivalent charge. They are accurate and super cheap (scrounged free wheel weights and free hulls from Skeet range trash cans)

LEE 12 ga Key drive SLUG for me also. I found pure lead allows the slug to release from the mold better, after removing some burrs on the mold. Pure lead allows the slug base to expand to the bore, on firing. . Better accuracy.
The load i chose averaged *7" @ 100 yards, with a *flyier, now and then.(*included in group size) A flyier would open 5 shot groups when a pellet was cut off on firing. A different wad may have solved this.
Reloading the fired WW AA cases helped accuracy, as they became fire formed to the Mossberg cantilever barrels chamber.
Loading was done using a Mec 600Jr.

I also find that 8 point crimp hulls work better for the slugs whereas 6 point crimp hulls work for the 9 pellet buck loads.

I don’t think I’d be able to make slugs in my apartment complex, that’s why I was considering making sabot slugs so I could use conventional rifle bullets wrapped in a wadding.

I take a WW #7 1/2 shot target load and cut the crimp off, dump out the shot, insert a Lee 1oz cast "key drive" slug, trim the plastic case and roll crimp.
Can use the shot to make more slugs. Use the powder and primer already in the shell.
They work well out of an old Stevens pump and an old H&R Topper at 25 yards (indoor range).
