Picked a nice one up at the HGCA show in the NRG center in Houston for $300 yesterday. I have seen them much cheaper at pawnshops in the past, but never got one. I figured I might as well go ahead and get one before they got any higher and I ain't getting any younger. It makes a nice little pattern.
What do any of you think about them?

I would have gone $300 in a heartbeat as it would compliment my Remington 510P. You don not see the smooth bore flavors very often. I have quite a few old .22 rimfires and have yet to pickup a smooth bore. Enjoy it! :)

[/IMG] Just seen one in person at the club, in July. I find them and others interesting.. Googled 6mm and 9mm to see what they were . Some on Youtube to.

I have a Remington 34 (tube repeater bolt gun) Smooth bore and the Anschutz Zephyr. The Zephyr has about 10 foot more range than the 34 does and unlike the Remington it feeds CCI shot capsules shells instead of crimped shot. I like them both and use them around the homestead more than anything else. Colonel Cooper referred to such as "housekeeping guns" ,

i own two bolt action single shot remington.22 smooth bores, a 580 and a 510(routletdge bore). both like the crimped .22 shot shells over the cci with the plastic head. i keep the vermin around the out buildings down with them. i buy the .22 crimped shells when i can. eastbank.

Now I have to wonder (oh, no, KBob is thinking again!) is there a legal problem with drilling out the front two thirds of a .22 Rifle that has muzzle and muzzle end rifling wear from 40 years of rodding from the front to make something like that anshutz?

Maybe drilling out the bore like you were going to do a relining but stopping with six inches of rifling left at the breech end. Polish the smooth bore area up with a dowel and "Sand Paper".

Mechanically I see no issues doing this. Are there legal issues?

This is sort of what my legal suppressor manufacturing friend does with 10/22 bull barrels. He plunges the barrels from the muzzle end down to about four and a half inches of rifling and uses the barrel itself for his "cans" making the barrel and gun a dedicated suppressor host.

Wonder if I could talk him into trying some shot from one of his demo guns. Come to think of it he has done some bull barrel/cans on some marlin bolt guns.

There shouldn't be any legal issues preventing you from converting a rifle into a shotgun as long as the barrel is at least 18" long. Remember that while a rifle can have a 16" barrel, a shotgun must have an 18" barrel or it's a SBS and falls under the NFA.

That said, if a sub-18" barrel has significant rifling remaining, as in the Anschutz above, it might still legally be considered a rifle. In that case it would be a good idea to get guidance in writing from the BATFE.
