Many of you have seen my animated map of shall-issue states:

rtc.gif
http://www.gun-nuttery.com/rtc.php

A few years ago someone asked if they could include it in the Wikipedia article Concealed carry in the United_States. I said yes.

Since then there have been repeated attempts by Wiki admins to have it removed under various pretexts. The last time it was because its use hadn't been permitted by the author. Hell, I'm the author, I granted permission, that should have been enough. But I jumped through the hoops to formally release it under the Creative Commons license, uploaded it to WikiCommons, and finally managed to get the image restored.

Now there's an admin who has had it pulled because it violates Wikipedia's "Verifiability" policy. Claiming that my sources aren't "uninvolved". As if any newspaper reporter was, on this issue.

What I would like to do is to be able to provide cites to published newspaper reports for every transition in the map - an article for every state that changed from may- or no-issue to shall-issue (and two articles for Alaska, one for when it went shall-issue, and another for when it went Vermont-carry.)

Thing is, that's a lot of work. If folks could give me a hand, search out their own state, and email me a cite, it'd help a lot. I'd prefer online links, but citations to the printed paper will work (and will probably be all we will be able to get, for the states that transitioned prior to 1994.)

It's clear that my little image is chapping the ass of more than one Wiki admin, and I think it does us good to have it there. Help would be appreciated.

That was you? I love that image. Good work.

Information, you ask? Let me get to work.

This article is from the Arizona Daily Star. Unfortunately, one needs to pay a fee for the archives. Here is the headline that is visible, though.

Hundreds of Arizonans, eager to legally conceal the guns they carry, contacted Arizona Department of Public Safety officers yesterday to get the application process started. Gov. Fife Symington signed a bill Wednesday allowing adults to carry concealed weapons after obtaining a permit and meeting other requirements. The law takes effect 90 days after the legislative session adjourns. Under the law, virtually any law-abiding adult can apply to the DPS for a permit. Applicants must provide

=N.M.'s new concealed gun law—city cop: May curb crime

Andrea Egger
Staff Writer

GALLUP — Local law enforcement have mixed opinions as to the effects of the state's new handgun law.

The law effectively allows anyone 25 or older in New Mexico to possess a concealed, loaded firearm.

By signing Senate Bill 23 on Monday, Gov. Bill Richardson's aim was to reduce crime in the state by giving people the ability to easier arm themselves for protection. The measure goes into effect Jan. 1, 2004.

League City leads state in concealed weapons

The Associated Press

LEAGUE CITY (AP) - This Galveston County burg of about 45,000 people is the gun-totingest town in a famously gun-toting state, according to an analysis showing residents in the League City ZIP code hold the highest number of concealed weapons licenses in Texas.

Abstract (Document Summary)

Louisiana State Police initially expected about 40,000 people to apply for a permit to carry a concealed weapon under a new state law in 1996, but they have only received 16,000 requests for a permit package and only about 1,600 have returned the completed application.

That's enough for now. It is sleepy time. When I wake up, I'll pick up where I left off.

That's a fundamental problem with a public wiki: people more interested in ideology than truth game the mechanism towards their agenda.

When you're done pulling your sources together, expect to be attacked based on your image being "original research", or based on "internet or blog sources".

Thanks for the help. I'll add this to what I've accumulated myself, and add a table to the web-page with what we've gathered so far, in a couple of days.

PERMITS DRAW CRITICS' FOCUS

The Mississippi law enforcement community is gearing up to work with a new gun permit law most say is dangerous and poorly written but that went into effect Sunday. The new law, which lawmakers failed to change during a special session that adjourned Saturday, allows most adult residents to apply for a permit to carry a handgun anywhere they want, including into bars and at demonstrations.

All sides had hoped to clear up the poorly written measure during the special session to address...

Kansas gun permits not picking up
Lag time, application fee, approval process cited as deterrents

Regional Reporter

Most Northeast Kansas residents still aren't attracted to conceal-and-carry gun permits, almost six months after state law made them available.

Several sheriffs in the region say conceal-and-carry permit seekers have barely registered a trickle in requesting applications since mid-July. The Kansas attorney general's office began approving the first permits last week, said spokesman Jan Lunsford. The Kansas Department of Revenue began issuing the permits Wednesday, the attorney general's office said.

OMAHA, Neb. -- Concealed handgun applications were issued for more than 60 Nebraskans during the first day under a new law Wednesday.

It will be about two weeks before those first applicants can legally carry concealed weapons.

The Nebraska State Patrol said it expects many more applicants.

The interest in concealed carry permits vary. Security firms want them to help build business. Other told KETV NewsWatch 7 they want the permit, but never plan to carry a concealed gun.

Gun Bill Requiring Colorado Permits Passes

DENVER -- State lawmakers debated a proposal Monday that would require people with concealed handguns to have a valid Colorado permit.

Sen. John Morse, sponsor of Senate bill 34, called it a common sense bill while gun owners said it is unneeded legislation.

The debate was held in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing room where gun owner groups appeared to oppose the bill. The bill was passed by the committee with a vote of 3-2.

Morris said some gun owners rely on permits issued by other states, a loophole that needs to be closed.

"At the risk of wearing out an old legislative cliché, it sounds like this bill is a solution in search of a problem," said Anthony Fabian of the Colorado Gun Shooting Association.

Some gun owners said they couldn't meet the state's standards, while other gun owners may also be taking advantage of out-of-state permits that may have cost advantages.

"I think there are too many people doing that," said Morris. "If you live in Colorado and need a Colorado driver's license, I think you should need a Colorado concealed weapons permit if you want to carry a concealed gun."

"We know that there are actually firearm instructors in the metro area that are teaching these home defense pistol classes and advising their clients to go to other states because it's cheaper and has a longer expiration date," said Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle.

Opponents of the bill said permits issued by some other states are more widely honored in the U.S., an advantage for those who travel.

"In some areas he feels he needs to carry a concealed weapon and it's easy for him because ... if he has a Florida permit -- it applies to a great many states," said Dudley Brown with Rocky Mountain Gun Owners.

Those in favor of the bill were not able to cite many specific examples of times when having an out-of-state permit posed a problem in Colorado. However, local police and sheriffs are in favor of the bill.

Morris added some flexibility to the bill by giving out-of-state gun owners a 90-day grace period to get a Colorado gun permit.

The Missouri Legislature has finally made it possible for Missourians to pack heat, an effort driven by those who live in parts of the state where cow tipping is the most serious crime problem. Well, I have paying work to do. I'll hit some more of these later. If anyone else can dump a few states, I would appreciate it.
If at all possible, please find an internet copy of a printed newspaper article.

Wikipedia was a neat idea that failed as a result of its own popularity. The more it became perceived as a source of truthful information, the more desirable it became for people to use it as a tool for disseminating propaganda. Not unlike the mainstream news media.

Plus, an enormous portion of the articles (especially on firearms) are written by 13 year old boys who play too much counterstrike.

And yeah, their citations rule is self contradictory and basically just a cudgel for admins to purge views they disagree with.

Another problem is that there is a huge amount of information being hidden in the poor organization of wikipedia articles- you can find a huge volume of information about X in an article about Y which relates to X, but when you bring up the page on X you get almost nothing without even a link to Y informing you of the information there. This problem is everywhere in wikipedia.

Do we know any wiki admins we could use to fight back with? With a decent trebuchet we could fling 'em right into the opposing admins.

I want to thank everyone who's helped, so far.

I'll be adding a table to the website this weekend. I just don't have time, right now.

That was you huh? I actually saw that image on wikipedia and it made me happy.... I'd help you but since I live in CA it's pretty obvious that we haven't had any switch over to RTC...

Keep up the fight friend.

Is there anything we can do to bug the wiki admins or something to get this back up?
