Ruger 10/22 As Home Defense and SHTF rifle

But for defense, no, it isn't a good choice because I don't think you could consistenly kill someone or something, especially from a distance.

How does that apply to "home defense". Shooting people from a distance is not self defense, a grand jury would likely call that "murder". There's even commandments in the bible concerning that.

I'd have no problem defending myself in my home with my 10/22, though I normally keep a shotgun and a .38 for that job. A couple of .22 stingers (my 10/22 loves 'em) to the chest and game over, at least if I was on the receiving end of it. We have anyone willing to stand in front of a 10/22 for testing? I'd rather keep a 10/22 than an AR15 with FMJ for several reasons. Fragmenting bullets in an AR are superior, but then, lots of folks don't have, don't want, and/or can't afford an AR. I fit all three of those categories. LOL Do have this nice Rossi lever action .357 magnum that I would choose for home defense if I were forced to use a rifle. I have killed deer with it and it didn't go far.

Thanks for the replies, my location is near a city but just far enough to be out in the desert with little to no houses near by one house is about 300 yards froom us. We have a large pool and a very nice house. if in the event of a large foreighn or domestic problem I plan on staying home an trying to survive till it is over. My 10/22 idea was beacuse they are cheep and ammo is so cheep it is unreal, I have shot the 10/22 for many years and they are great but sometimes they do have a feed problem and I am my friends and cousins all have them and they all jam at least once through a 25 rounder. I love my only other canidate is a Yugo SKS which might be a better idea, not sure yet. What ever it is a buy I plan on buying enough of them to keep one in all of my families hands.

An Infantry 16-month veteran of Iraq just told me last Thur. that one speck of sand........

And plenty of veterans, active duty, etc. will even say "an ak 47 can fire M16 ammuntion" and other such myths.

I have to agree with Ratshooter.

The 10/22 will do just fine. Is there better gus for home defence? Sure there is. But the .22 rifle has some very real advantages. Dirt cheap ammo for tons of practice. Not being rich, theres just no way I could shoot the amount I do (1000 to 1500 rounds a week) with anything but a .22. Being a senior citizen on a fixed income I have to be carefull with money, but I love to shoot.

Whats better to defend oneself with, a gun you only shoot once in a while because of expencive ammo, or the gun you use twice a week to the tune of hundreds of rounds at a time?

With a .22 rifle being quiet, accurite, and cheap to practice with, gives alot on the plus side.

Thanks for agreeing with me Carl.

I like my 22s. It doesn't matter if its my 10-22 of Marlin model 60 or 75c i can do some really good shooting with these guns.

I can hit running rabbits, dodging squirrels and even shot a finch out of the air once.

If your a BG and your dumb enough to hold still for it i can shoot off your ears, put out you eye or give you a split between your front teeth just like that old English actor Terry Thomas. You'll look real pretty laying in your box.

ok look at it this way a 10/22 will cost you 3 big ones or so

your life costs a lot more then that so i would get the best I can afford b/c I know that I want to win in a gun fight

Just remember you don't bring a knife to a gun fight

Around here they go for less than $200, IIRC.

How about both the 10/22 and a decent 12 gauge shotgun? I think you'd have your bases pretty well covered then, at a minimal expense. You can pick up a Remingon 870 express pretty cheap, and use slugs to reach out and touch someone out to 50 yards if needed.

Add an SKS to the mix, and you've duplicated my plan :D

O! about that myth being you can shoor 5.56 out of a AK-47 it is true. I have done it, I did it with a Yugo ak underfolder I have. It shot it but then the case expanded in the chamber leaving me pissed off and messing with it for a few minutes till it cam out. (DO NOT TRY IT) O! and when you through sand in the gun it works too, tried that too  \

So if it really came down to it and you ran out of ammo you could use a 223, kinda, I most likley hert my barrel doing that as the bullet bounced down the chmaber:what:

Well...I think alemonkey came closest...

Dollar for dollar imho you will not beat a 12 ga. pump gun for versatility-period. About the only things I can think of in the .22s favor are noise level, recoil, and ammo cost.

The 12 ga. will do everything that .22 can do and more. It will out-gun it for defense and hunting (think everything from a rabbit to a good size mammal and more...). It is easy for youngsters and inexperienced persons to shoot *and* hit with. Loads are available that are tame enough not to scare someone into not using it while they work their way up to harder stuff. A pump gun or even a double\single shot are simple to use and easy to maintain. With a two barrel setup you are really living and good to go for any situation I can think of out to 100 yds. no-sweat.

With all the firearms available *if* pressed to settle on the one that could (almost) do it all, it would have to be the 12 gauge shotgun.

As a survival rifle, it would work fine.

As a self-defense gun, I'd look elsewhere. If I'm in a situation where the lives of myself or my family could be on the line, I want as many things in my control as possible, including a reasonable assurance that as long as I place my shots where they are supposed to go the cartridge has enough stopping power to immediately knock the bad guy out of action. If you want a rifle for HD, look at a .223, .22WMR, 7.62x39, or even a .30-30 lever gun. 12-gauge shotgun is never a bad choice either.

Only thing a .22 rim fire is going to be good for is maybe putting some food on the table. So yes I would have a .22 and some ammo stockpiled but I would probably go with something more accurate and a bolt action, even a single shot. My fighting rifle for serous work out to 700 yards or so is an Enfield in .303.

I definitely agree with the others that have suggested throwing a 12-gauge shotgun into the mix. Much better for home defense, and useful for hunting birds or large game (deer). The 10/22 is great for the smaller game and such.
