Ruger KRH 444

Anyone have thoughts on the "New" Ruger Redhawk KRH 444. 4" 44Mag.
Am considering this handgun for a backwoods back-up piece........

Neat gun, the DA pull on the ones I've seen is smooth. The SA is heavy. I would very much like to own one with only one modification-- change the caliber to .45 colt. Even as they are, I find myself mighty tempted... If you haven't seen it yet, John Taffin has a review of these in the this month's GUNS magazine.

I've been very impressed with mine. Trigger is pretty good right from the box, accuracy is better than I am and fit and finish is very well done. Some folks complain about the grips but having tried it with the factory Hogue and the factory wood, I much prefer the Hogues.

The .45 Colt is coming out now for those of you that like that round better. My advice is to buy one in the caliber you choose, it's really been a good gun for me after about a thousand rounds so far.

One of my best! I work armed and wouldn't want to be without it.

I had to do requlification and instructor watched me put 3 dead center in a row. Not kidding here. This weapon kicks hard with heavy loads. After 48 shots you might not want to finish the box. Don't move the sight with different amo. Watch where you hit and move your aim. With heavy loads I aim just slightly high right.

The .45 Colt is coming out now for those of you that like that round better.

I've had mine in .45 Colt for more than six months!! It's one of my favorite handguns and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I gave a review of sorts here.

I got one about a month ago. Hard to find, I ended up ordering it from Midwest Hunting and had it shipped to FFL dealer. I shot about 150 rounds through it last Saturday. 100 cowboy loads with a 240 mastercast lswc and ~6.4 gr Trailboss, and 50 240gr Sierra JHC with ~23.5gr of H-110. I love it!! I've always wished Ruger would make a 4" version so I've been trying to get one for a couple of years. It was worth the wait. Double action is as smooth or smoother than most newer Smiths that I've compared it to (not a slam to Smith, but a compliment to Ruger).

I just got a KRH444. Anyone have advice on how to remove the one piece Hogue grips? The gun came with a tool but the instructions are pretty sparse. I'd rather get some comments rather than just start poking around on my own. Thanks!

I bought one in Mar.'09, first revolver I've owned in over 25 years, now I own two of them. The other is a Ruger Alaskan in .44 Rem. Mag. I'm real pleased that Ruger is producing short barreled, large caliber handguns like these. I'm going to use them for back-up/concealed-carry/bear defense. Last night I was reading an older edition of Handguns2005,(17th edition), there was a extensive article on converting a 5.5" one into a 3.5", it almost looked like the KRH444, I like the factory grips more. Otherwise they did a great job at what Ruger produced a few years later.

Helps to understand what your trying to do. There is a grip locator in the grip frame: it's a pin that sticks out on both sides of the frame and into the monobloc grip. What you are doing with the tool is spreading the sides of the grip so that it clears the locating pin. Once you've opened up far enough, the grip slides straight down and off.

Had a KRH444 for a few months. Liked it plenty, but it is massive! Also had a 5-inch KRH, and decided I didn't need both. Kept the 5, sold the 4. Have had some (a little) seller's remorse. But think I'll be happier with my new-to-me pre-lock three-inch S&W 629-1. I plan to shoot .44 spls mostly, but stoke it up with mags when out in the woods. The 5-inch RH now sports a scope and is set up for hunting.
