I just purchased a Ruger P89. Does anybody own or have any info on them? I have never had any Ruger autos before. Are they reliable? Should I look for any problems?

Thanks in advance

I've had mine for 12 years and have about 4K rounds through it. I've run it clean, I've run it dirty, I've run it with pristine factory mags and crappy cheap aftermarkets. I've run brass, aluminum and steel cased ammo. I've run 500 rounds through it over two days without cleaning.

I've had exactly one stoppage in all that. A Wolf FMJ steel cased load that didn't have a powder charge. It squibbed and blocked the bore. Brass rod and hammer and she was running again.

Reliability is not an issue with them at all. It is one of their strong points. They can be accurate weapons too, if you get used to a fairly heavy and long trigger pull. The Ruger P90 and later models have better triggers for sure, but there is nothing really wrong with the P89's that some practice won't cure.

If you are after a concealed carry weapon I would advise looking at the P95 in 9mm instead, but for an HD weapon or truck gun the P89 will serve you well. That being said, I CCW'd my P89 for years. :)

Just remember to flip the lever in the magwell back up after you reassemble it -- or you'll be concerned when the hammer won't stay cocked! Screwiest take down of any auto I've owned!

Otherwise, a solid and utterly reliable gun -- just bulky!

Me too

I've had a P89DC (decocker) in stainless over aluminum since about 1995.
It was the first gun I bought to get re-engaged with shooting, and it was the first centerfire pistol. It was a nice-looking gun at a great price, and a name-brand.
Since then, I've bought a number of other guns that are smaller, prettier, etc. The Ruger now seems a bit clunky to me compared to the newer guns. I've thought of selling it several times, but then I think: "What's the one gun I own that I KNOW for a fact will ALWAYS go bang when I really need it to?"
There's only one answer, that Ruger.
I did put Hogue rubber grips on it, which made it handle MUCH better. Get rid of those Flimsy plastic grip panels and spend $17 on the Hogue finger-groove grips. I also bought a couple of Ruger 15-round magazines, as it came with 10-rnd mags.
One thing it has over my 1911s or HiPower is that it's double-action on first round. All I have to do is pick it up and pull the trigger. It also has twice the mag capacity of the 1911 (and equal to the HP).
One thing it has over my Keltecs is that it is single action after the first round. It has a real hammer that I can safely drop with the decocker. And 50% more mag capacity.
So mine resides in my bedside table, ready to go if the neighbors get rowdy.

I have had one since the mid 90's. It has never had any sort of issue with it what so ever. I shoot it better than any handgun I own. I also feel you could run over it with a tank, pick it up, and continue shooting it.

I picked up my P89DC back in March. In that time, I've put somewhere around 1000 rounds through it. At one time, I ran over 600 rounds of WWB without cleaning it. Accuracy wasn't affected, and it never failed to go bang. I'd like to go out with it more often than I do, but money for ammo is just isn't there for me right now.

I'm very well satisfied with it, and I'll own it as long as I can.
