My brother purchased a new Ruger p95 and wanted me to go to the range with him and get him pointed in the right direction as this is his first handgun. I met him there and the gun would not feed after you fired a shot but the hammer would be back and it frequently didn't eject correctly. We took it home and cleaned it and I was surprised at the amount of grease inside. Thinking we had found the problem we went again today and it simply would not feed a new round after being fired, but the hammer would be back. He was using Remington UMC that he purchased with the gun. We tried some PMC and some of my reloaded rounds and it worked like it should. Is there a problem with the UMC shells or is this thing going to have to see a bunch of rounds before it performs like it should?

Mine has been almost 100% reliable out of the box and I bought it around 2002. I did have some feed issues out of one box of wwb that I bought during the shortage and they measured longer than max length. Try loading only one of the umc rounds in the chamber with an empty mag. If the slide locks open they have enough power and it may be an issue with the length or nose profile causing a jam. Even though the gun is new the recoil spring may be out of spec.

You found the two ammo brands that my P95 hates. Avoid UMC or any ammo with a "fuzzy" finish on the cases. UMC is junk. Smooth brass is key.

Try some Federal and anything +P you can find. You can use +p+ as well.

The hammer is supposed to stay back. You were probally just pointing out that it made it back. Right? I polished the ramp on my barrel and cleaned the chamber really well. That helped as well. Maybe we need fresh recoil springs? Mine seems kinda weak.

Don't think I've ever tried UMC in it, but I've put at least 1000 rounds (possibly 2000) rounds through my P95 and its never field to feed anything. Its one of only a few pistols I own that have a perfect record.

That said, everyone accidentally lets a lemon slip out every now and then. If it persists, just contact Ruger.

The point about the hammer being cocked indicates that the slide was going back but apparently not quite far enough to catch the next round. Slide seems to work easily by hand so I think it is an ammo problem as the PMC's and relaods worked fine. We will try it again in a few days with better ammo.

Try different ammo first. P95's are great pistols, but they are very easy to limp-wrist (I don't mean this as any kind of insult, I've seen it more than once, even with experienced shooters). If the problem persists, have another shooter try it before you send it off to Ruger.

Rule: That may be part of the problem also as he is new to shooting and his daughter is also. She had the problem with every shot with UMC and he did also. When I fired it we had PMC or some of my reloads in it and had no problem. Neither one of them had trouble with reloads so their may be a combination of UMC and limp wristing involved.

UMC is some of the lightest loaded commercial ammunition you can find. Once the gun is broken in it might feed OK, but there are many better ammunition options available for no extra cost.

I agree that limp wristing is most likely the problem. I have owned and shot well over half a dozen of these handguns and have encountered no problems with any of my guns. Firm grip...tight wrist...clean gun, not overly lubed and try it again. I think the idea of letting someone else shoot the gun would be a good diagnostic. UMC, WWB, Blazers, you name it and my guns have handled them all just fine.
