Another pistol has just been added to my must have list. I fondled one in 454 but I didn't want to add another caliber to my ammo supply.44 Mag is more widely available.
Same sentiments here. The SRH Alaskan was a great backup package but I didn't want to add a new caliber to my ammo supply also. Now that it comes in .44mag I think I might consider it then. The Alaskan loaded with the hottest .44mags from BB, DT, Garrett or Grizzly Cartridge would still be a very capable backup against big, toothy creatures.
I personally believe there are better choices for a defensive woods gun in .44 mag, such as the S&W airweights. The advantage to the Alaskan was the .454 chambering in a fairly compact gun (though I think for it's intended purpose, it would have benefitted from a 3-1/2 or 4" barrel).
