I have a few quick questions about the new S&W Military and Police compact pistols;

Can you use full size M&P 17rd mags in the 9mmNATO compact models?

Do the M&P compact models have the "takedown" part in the frame or can you field strip the pistol w/o any tools?

Do the S&W M&P compacts have mag safeties, security locks etc? Can you buy a compact w/o these annoying features?

Hi Rusty, I'll play . I have a M&P .40 Compact, but same things apply.
1. I cannot answer this one from experience, but have been told that the full size mags fit just fine in the Compact models.

2. Yes, the Compacts do have the "takedown" part in the frame. I don't even use it. I am able to use my little finger.

3. I do believe that you can buy the Compacts with or with out all of the "features". Mine does not have the mag safety or the security lock. The security lock hole is covered.

Yes. They'll stick out further, obviously, but they'll work.

Yes, and yes.

They're optional, AFAIK. I think the default is to market it with both, but you can get the gun with one or the other, or neither.

It's a good gun. As was said, it has the takedown tool, but you don't need to use it. I use my finger, or a cleaning rod.

The full size mags from my M&P40 will fit into my M&P40 compact. Have not tried to fire the compact like that yet. It would be nice to have a spacer to fit in there ala the XD45 compact so you can use the full size as a backup.

Mine is also feature free and a great shooter. S&W really has done a great job with this series.

Thanks Mag releases/drop-free

Thank you for your posts. I know the M&P models have mag releases that can be switched but do the mags "drop free" or just slide out part of the way.

I prefer the "drop free" type for duty/CC pistols. I had a Robar NP3 plated Beretta 96D that could do it with both loaded/unloaded pistol mags, .

Some other brands do not work the same way. I did hear that Glock redesigned their mags to "drop free" but I never shot them.

Coronach was all correct there. I have not fired my 9c with the full size mag but it fits fine. I'm looking for some if anyone finds them.
You can get a M&P with no mag disconnect safety or with one, lock or no lock, night sights or not (mine has none). Mags are drop free. Gun is totally ambidextrious.
Oh, and I don't think anyone said it but you don't even need to flip the sear disconnect lever to field strip, just pretend it's a glock. Someone said that this isn't okay but I can't figure out why (especially after seeing my smith do it). The lever just lifts the sear, just like pulling the trigger does. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT WONT HURT YOUR GUN, I JUST CAN'T SEE HOW IT WOULD. Someone please correct if me if I am wrong.
Get the M&P (get the shooters pack or whatever its called if you can find it). Its only a few bucks more with an extra mag, holster and mag holster. Hopefully your dealer will actually check into what he/she can order instead of saying the compact isn't available with night sights.
Go to the M&P forum (my signature) there's a bunch of very knowledable and VERY friendly guys over there that are glad to help.

I bought the compact and my wife one upped me by buying the fullsize with the Carry kit for only 20 bucks more when I picked up my compact! Oh well, at least I have both then.

Regarding the takedown tool and sear release lever:

You don't have to use either. If you want to flip down the sear release lever, you can use a small screwdriver, pick or even your fingernail. Or - if you're willing to accept responsibility if things go awry - you don't have to do anything with the sear release lever. Just pull the trigger. Of course, if there was a round in the chamber you will blow a hole in something.

Gun is totally ambidextrious

I don't know about that, on mine the mag release only works from one side, it's not ambi like an HK or XD.

BTW I performed a trigger job on mine today, it's even better than it was now.

You can reverse it.

It's not ambidextrous in the sense that you can shift the gun from hand to hand and operate the controls with both, but it is ambidextrous in the sense that you can adjust it for use with either hand.

Rusty:
The mags will drop free with little effort when empty. Just give them a basic film of Rem-oil and they wont stick. If there's any ammo in them, they'll drop like a rock. I love my M&P 40, and no matter what you think of previous Smith products, or how loyal you are to Glock, the M&P is changing minds.
