Anyone know if S&W revolver keys for internal locks work for all of their revolvers or just that model?

Thanks.

I dont even know if it works in my own S&W...and I don't intend to find out. I'm keeping that key as far away from my gun as possible.

Wow Dawg, What a useful post! Good thing Jake has such helpful folks willing to stay on topic and deliver relevant information directly related to the question he asked.

Jake - As far as I have seen the locks appear to be the same on all J frames at least. Someone else will need to chime in who's got multiple frame sizes at-hand..

The same key works in all models that I own. I have a J-Frame 642, L-Frame 686, and X-Frame 500. I assume the same key works for all models.

I am not sure about the M&P semiautomatic pistol however.

Thanks for the help. I'm thinking of picking up a SW 686, but it doesn't have box or keys. I was wondering if it would work with the keys I already have.

Thanks.

IF you don't mind waiting a week, Smith & Wesson will mail you a set of keys for free.

I have one set of keys that fit a 640 and 686. I've heard that the keys are supposed to work for all smith models.

Headless...point well taken. I'm actually stunned that somebody would actually use the lock. Seriously...I was going to just throw away my keys after all the bad poop that just seethes regarding these locks on this and various boards. It was mentioned, however, that I might need it if, for whatever strange reason, the revolver accidently went into lock mode on its own volition. Made me think. So...though I may not just throw it away, I certainly was not going to key it...partly turn...or even attempt to fit the key into it should it in any way...form...or fashion hasten that bizarre incident.

Key Locks

I was in the S&W store in Springfield on Friday and nobody is more displeased with the lock guns than the folks who work there. I mentioned that I own and shoot a Model 57 with pin and counterbore and the guy just shook his head as if to say, "those were the guns". I have a new S&W Mountain Gun chambered in .45 Colt (with lock) and, as much as I like the gun, I would trade it in a heartbeat for an old Model 25. I may not make any money doing it but I plan to snap up every old-style Smith I can find in good condition.

I called to get a few keys sent to me and they didn't ask what gun it was for so Ii assume they are all the same.

Thanks for the replies.

Does anyone know when S&W began putting internal locks on their guns?
