Gifted my LNIB Model 63 (made in 1981) to a grandson last year. Sweet little .22 and a great shooter. Gifted this LNIB Model 34 (made in 1978) to another grandson about 10 years ago. Both have original boxes & papers. (pardon the bad cellphone pic with the screen reflections):

I do not know if the 1990 versions of the Model 63 have the stretched frame that accommodates 357 Magnum in other J-frame versions but that might lower the cost versus the earlier models as the gun is not quite as trim as the shorter frame versions. Conjecture from me for the most part.

I had a chance to make some comparisons of J-frame cylinder and frame lengths. My current manufactured Model 317 has the extended cylinder of the 357 Magnum Model 60. So, I'd suspect the current production version of the Model 63 would have the stretched 357 Magnum frame. S&W probably makes one J-frame size to minimize inventory and maximize flexibility of production.

Both my Model 317 and my 1978-1979 vintage Model 63 shoot great so the longer cylinder is not necessarily a functional disadvantage. The pre-stretched frame Model 63's are probably a bit more desirable than the current production units.

As an aside, comparing the stretched J-frames with the original, smaller, J-frames, the latter are just a bit smaller and would carry more easily. Not alot of difference, but it is noticeable. Of course, having the option of a 357 Magnum J-frame as its advantages as well.

Apologizes for the thread deviations. Back to discussions on the Model 63.
