After the AWB sunset, would it be possible (and legal) to convert a Saiga 12 gauge to the original configuration with a pistol grip and side folding stock?

Nope.

Good old 922(r) will still be in force. That's the one that won't let you assemble an imported firearm into a configuration that would be illegal for importation.

922r can be bypassed by substituting enough US made parts so that the weapon is considered US made. That is how Saiga rifle conversions are done. So once/if the ban is gone then you can use US parts in your conversion (I believe it is 7 or 8 specific parts) you will be good to go.

If your firearm contains a MAXIMUM of 10 imported parts from this list, it can be considered made in the US and is exempt from 922(r). Once the AW ban is gone, you can do whatever you like.

(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions
(4) Mounting blocks (trunnions)
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates

Really, so when I get a SAR-1/WASR-10, I can convert it as much as I want after the AWB expires?

And, can anyone post what a Saiga would look like with a pistol grip and regular buttstock?

The SAR-1, yes, because it is considered made in the USA. The WASR-10, no, unless you do the parts replacement to make it also made in the USA,

But, the original poster said that he wanted to convert a Saiga 12, isn't that the shotgun??? What you posted was a rifle... I'm so confused.
