How cheap is cheap?
What's the caliber?
Is it an old 99F, or a new 99F?
I'm firmly of the opinion that the 99 is one of the finest rifles ever made.
The original 99F, or 1899F, more properly, was the saddle ring carbine. It was introduced in 1899, and discontinued in 1919. Chamberings were .303 Savage, .30-30, .25-35, .32-40, and .38-55.
Early ones had a barrel band at the forearm, which was dropped around 1905. These are pretty uncommon, and bring nice collector prices.
A good condition 1899F today, with a good bore, should bring anywhere between $900 and $1,500.
The second F mode, the 99F (the 18 was dropped from the year) was introduced in 1955. It's the Featherweight version (yeah, right, it's got a big azzed beavertail forearm!) and a 22" barrel.
Caliber offerings were .300 Savage, .250 Savage, .243, .308, .358, and .284.
Prices on these will range from $300 to $600, normally, depending on the local market. The .358 and .284 bring substantial premiums, and are very uncommon. It's not unusual to see a .358 for $750, and a .284 for even more.
