What is the difference in a SBS and an AOW shotgun, with a under 18inch barrel? I have been thinking about getting an AOW shotgun due to the $5 tax rather than the SBS with the $200 tax.

I guess what I am asking is what makes it qualify as an AOW, instead of a SBS.

Thanks

I have seen SBS with just a pistol grip though.

Someone on another board said something about a pistol grip on the forarm was required for it to be an AOW. I dont know.

Legally, mainly the fact that an AOW has never been considered a "shotgun" prior to it's being designated as an AOW; if you take a factory Maverick 88, and cut it down to AOW dimensions, you're creating a SBS BUT if you take that same Maverick 88 receiver BEFORE it's assembled into a shotgun, then you can designate it as an AOW. That's what Serbu does to produce their Super-Shorty: http://serbu.com/top/superShorty.php

so I assume it has to be a "shotgun" that never had a butt stock installed?

Or does it have to be a virgin reciever?

What I was thinking of doing was building a SBS or AOW shotgun with about a 12 inch barrel, and thread the barrel for a choke tube, and use either a full or extra full choke to help keep the shot from spreading so much. If I do it, may just do it as a SBS and then I can use a butt stock if I want to.

In order for a shotgun to be desiganted an AOW, it has to have come from the factory as either a bare, virgin receiver, or with just a pistol grip installed.

If it has ever had a full stock installed, it can never be an AOW.

If it's registered as an AOW, it can never have a stock legally installed, unless the registration is changed to SBS.

You won't have to worry about making your own AOW for $5, as that's the transfer price. If you only want to shell out $5, then buy one already as an AOW. If you want to make your own, it'll cost $200, so you might as well go SBS.

Yea, I remember reading that now Mister. I read alot on different things, and sometimes I get confused. LOL
