the poll about sex offenders got me thinking...a kid i grew up with was recently released after serving a couple of months for "Attempted sexual assault of a minor". The few details i know is that he assaulted his friends little sister. thats what he was convicted of. there was claims that he also abused one of his cousins, but no charges were ever brought up for that.

thanks to the sex offender registry, his residence is made public. he lives a block away from an elementary school, and two blocks from a smaller private school.

now, heres the question: should i expect that school districts keep up to date with sex offenders that live in the vicinity to keep parents aware of the dangers their kids are around? or should i notify the schools myself?

until i learned of what this kid i grew up with did, i've always thought hes an alright guy. and i had difficulty thinking of him as a 'bad guy' until i realized that the only difference between him and some sex offender i dont know is that *THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE*. why treat this one different just because we played pickup games of football or hockey?

Make sure they keep up with things. If they know you're watching them, they'll be more inclined to watch him.

I don't know how they do it in your neck of the woods, but of all the schools I visit have the registered sex offender's recent color picture (multiple views), name, address, conviction info, and any incarceration dates posted in plain view in the office. It all gets faxed over as a matter of routine, as sad as that is.

You may want to find out what about any current district policy that may already exist. Then find out if it is being followed.

I doubt that this is overlooked in the (your) all too reactionary school "system". If it is, that would also be sad.

Rhetoric?

Exactly!
