Shot a Maveric 88, not impressed.

Maybe Kgriggs8 isn't shooting the gun we have been talking about. The gun he has been shooting is a MAVERIC, while the rest of us have been talking about the great for the money, reliable, MAVERICK. :)

Who is to say? (Yes I'm just kidding Kgriggs8)

I think the reason you are getting some grief on this is because nobody is on here saying the Maverick 88 should be nominated for shotgun of the year. That being said, a lot of us have purchased this shotgun, had great success and reliability with it, and then hear how cheap and crappy it is. I'm sure nobody is taking it personal, but at the same time, we are offering our experience with it.

I would say the bottom line of this thread is you probably won't be owning a Maverick 88 anytime soon. :)

I think you are right! My tastes are not quite $20,000 fine English doubles but the Maverick is just below what I would buy. I am happy with my two 870s and Winchester auto. I was looking at a $1000 Beretta auto over the weekend but I am not going to spend that. It is nice but beyond what I want to pay for a shotgun.

I still consider shotguns to be the ultimate working gun. I am not one to buy one just because it is pretty. I don't clean my shotguns like I clean my pistols and rifles. I treat them like tools. The thing is, even though I am cheap, I am not so cheap that I buy things that are not worth the money.

Everyone has their own view of where the line between inexpensive and cheap lies. I like to buy things that are inexpensive yet good quality. For me, a used pawn shop Rem 870 Express is inexpensive but still retains all the required quality you ever really need.

What is this world coming to when I agree with Deaf Smith:eek:.

I am a Remington Armorer and have been shooting their guns for twenty years but I own many different shotguns: Maverick 88, Mossberg 500, Benelli Nova, Remington 870 and 1100. I like my Mossberg the best because of the safety but Deaf called it right with the Maverick...take it out and shoot it and the action will smooth up. My maverick is my SD/truck gun and if someone was to steal it it wouldn't break the bank and above that it goes bang every time I pull the trigger.

I have also noticed a decline in Remington's products except the police 870 in the past 5 years.

Maverick 88

Another alternative to buy a cheap shotgun is buying a good used shotgun. I purchased a Winchester 120 in very good shape at a gun show here a couple of years ago. They were asking $150 for it, after walking away and then coming back about 4 times, I was able to get it for $85 out the door. Not a ding in the wood, and only one small scratch on the receiver. Great gun, great price.

Again, for the record: I personally don't like the maverick, nor the 870. I just don't see the point of a range report that doesn't try and diagnose a major problem like a foot high poa.

Now, if some company would make a shotgun with the build quality of a high-end 870, with the operating controls and internal mechanism of a mossberg 500/590, and a built in cantilevered scope mount with second barrel (ghost ring sights) in combo, that would be my ideal shotgun. Never going to see it, though. Especially not for less than $1,000.

This is generally the kind of experiance best save for a "Im thinking of buying a maverick 88" type thread. I know a guy with one, not a great gun, but if it was all you could afford, why not? its no 870 marine magnum, but it will still go bang.
