Should I get a SCAR 17

I handled one when they first came out. I think the design concept is great but the rifle seems cheap (frigging plastic). The price is ridiculous. So no, I would not buy one.

This is 2015.

I think it's time to stop thinking things are "cheap" because they are lighter more corrosion resistant and more durable.

Be it a SCAR 17, polymer pistol, cell phone, laptop, knife handle, child's toy, whatever.

Thanks for the opinions everyone, I just wanted to reiterate I did get the scar 17, hopefully my ffl will be home thursday to sign for it. Here is another question for you guys. I currently have a 1-4x Burris tac 30 scope on a pepr mount. It has a 223 bdc. would this be a good scope to mount to the scar? The guns role will be multi purpose, and I really like having the 1x level so the scope can be used like a red dot, with a little magnification if I need it. I feel like putting this scope on the scar doesn't do it justice, the main draw of putting it on the gun is that I already have it and it's not being used. If you don't think I should put it on (which i'm expecting many won't) do you have any suggestions on what might be a good choice for me? The most I can spend is 1300, and big points for scopes under that price that operate as well as higher priced scopes.

This month's American Rifleman mag. previewed the new Burris XTR II 158 1.5-x8 28mm. using .308 ammo for $999. This might be an affordable option for you.

Do some reading on what a SCAR can do to optics before going inexpensive. My recommendation is an ACOG for that rifle.

If I had a SCAR I would probably put an ACOG TA11 on it (3.5x green or red chevron .308 reticle and good eye relief)

thanks for the replies, I was hoping I'd hear acog, I don't have one and have always wanted one. What sets the t11 apart from others to be a good choice for me?

ACOGs are awesome. But you said you wanted something that could be used as a red dot right? Ive used ACOGs on serious use guns and they can work up close with some training. They are truly great combat optics.

.308 ranging/BDC reticle and good eye relief are the reasons that is the one I would go with that one.

I'm got a TA11 (.233, red ring reticle) and it's a great optic. Good glass, easy to use, and robust construction.

The ring reticle is fast close up with practice, and if the ring is on target out to about 300 yards you'll get a hit.

The downside is cost, but TANSTAAFL applies here as it usually does.

Interesting thread, I was in a similar position and wanted something that would be a good battle rifle and was not too heavy since I am in my 60's.I had AR's and sold them, just not for me even with my military training the nostalgia feeling did not come with the AR.

I ended up purchasing a SCAR 17 and put a Nikon M-308 on it. It is a very good scope but after zeroing it and throwing around a bit of lead determined it was too much scope for what I wanted the rifle for, something I really did not fully think through. I also wanted 2 eyes open capability which I cannot do with a scope. I ended up putting on a Trijicon 3x30 ACOG which fit my needs perfectly. I do not see me shooting it over 500 yards and I expect the ACOG to be able to handle that range as long as my eyes can.

I feel the recoil is light and easily managed, if there is a negative it is the muzzle brake sends the noise out the sides so the people shooting next to you will not be impressed, does not bother me.

I'll add my .02 in to the thread, even though the OP is already committed.

I use a SCAR17 as a match rifle in NRA High Power.

Sitting rapid fire @ 200 yards on SR target with Hornady factory ammo. 60 seconds, unloaded rifle. Load, shoot 5, reload, shoot 5. This was done with no spotting scope, using the factory iron sights, without a shooting coat. Only add-on was a Turner sling. (I can clean the target with this rifle with rapid fire, routinely, with my Creedmoor coat on)

So accuracy ... yeah. It has that. No, it won't keep pace with a true match rifle shooting more refined handloads (because that's an X ring game), but it'll definitely keep me in the 10 ring consistently. :)

As it is currently equipped for High Power across the course matches;

EDIT: Bah. this isn't how it is currently equipped - I swapped that muzzle break for a Smith Vortex to be NRA legal.

Note that I have changed out the folding stock and added a VLTOR. The folding stock.. well, it really, really sucks for positional shooting; especially if the user has a beard. (Ouch).

I also have a Leupold VX IV long range scope on quick throw heavy ARMS rings for precision shot placement on pesky squirrels.

SQUIRREL!

I have shot it in all sorts of conditions ranging from 100+F summer days to -20F winter days.

This is the same rifle dressed with the folding stock, Harris ultralight bipod, and that Leupold scope.

I shot that rifle extensively through 2014 in high power matches and didn't need to clean it. It stays IMMACULATE. Even when shooting dirty Malaysian surplus ammo. Or even dirtier Winchester ammo. :)

It's a great rifle, but the entry price is steep.

Is it worth it?

That's up to the individual to decide.. but for me? A lot of other rifles are collecting dust since I bought it. It is a fantastic rifle... except for that pesky folding stock thing.

Also to add; if you are going to shoot positional shooting, with a 1907 sling, use a glove!

Those rails are harsh. Even with rail covers the edges (corners) will tear up your hand.

The side rails CANNOT BE REMOVED. There is a spring inside the side rails that actually locks the receiver bolts in place. If you take off the side rails there is nothing providing positive locking to prevent the receiver from rattling itself apart.

We chipped in and got one for Dad for Christmas 2013. It's a great rifle and he loves it. Soft shooting for a .308. Put a Leupold VXR 1-4x on it in a PEPR mount, along with a VTAC sling and several extra mags. I still need to bench test it but would like to have one myself.

Soft shooting for a .308.

"Soft shooting"

Pull that compensator off the front and your tune will change quick. :)

When I switched out for the smith vortex, the very first time I shot rapid fire prone at a high power match was exciting.

Got situated, got my natural point of aim for the SR3C at 300 yards.

Mag in my hand.

Buzzer sounds.

Insert mag, chamber round, sights on target.

Pull trigger.

BRRRRRRP

Oh hell. I just fired 3 shots.

Squeeze rifle tighter, pop off remaining 2.

Drop mag

Reload with second mag / 5 rounds.

Sights on target

Squeeze trigger

BRRRP

SONOFAB****

3 rounds on target... again.

Squeeze rifle tighter.

Pop off remaining 2 rounds.

I scored something like a 86 on that string? I had 6 rounds in the 10 ring, 4 rounds in the 6/7 rings - all 4 high... due to the bump firing.

On a related note that was the LAST time I shot that rifle prone without tightening the shoulder straps on my creedmoor coat.

The shoulder bunched up on me that first time, and it created just enough of a cushion, and the rifle had JUST enough more recoil energy, to do a really graceful 3 round burst bumpfire.

I was truly surprised that all 10 rounds impacted the SR target at 300 yards when we did scoring.

That was the fastest damn time I ever had on rapid fire, too! I was done with 30+ seconds to spare.

You should be shootin' up a pallet of Sigs, then.

That one made me smile. It was precisely the inability of a new SIG 556 SWAT to impress that caused me to sell it for a SCAR 16 (in black of course).

I do realize that if I had bought a SCAR first and it had been problematic and got the SIG 556 second and it had been a good one I would be saying the reverse.
