Came across a Sig 1911 nightmare last week that fits quite nice, I like it. The key I believe to a 1911 I'm going to be friends with is a bobtail. Considering this is a used pistol costing around $800, what else should I look at?

Qualifier: not a carry gun, range use.

Why would a bobtail be your primary reason to own when this will be a range gun?

You mean "fit" as in your hands?

If that's the case, I understand as I change all my m1911s to thinner grips and shorter triggers to better fit my hands.

On customs, I have the beaver tail modified to high-ride as well.

$800 seems like a good price as long as the internals and rails are OK. Will you get a chance to fire it before you buy?

I wish, it's for sale only.

The only other 1911s I see with factory bobtails around here are Kimbers and Dan Wessons. The Kimbers seem to run about $1200 or so, the Dans are rarely seen below $1500 or so.

I have a Sig Fastback Carry, which is the same pistol as the Nightmare, except there are no bare stainless highlights, and it has rosewood grips.

$800 seems high for a used one... I paid only $89 more than that for a brand new one. Just my opinion of course. Different parts of the country pay more/less money.

Other than that, mine has functioned very well. These guns have a lot of options that others don't have until you get way up over $1K.

S&W makes them

I agree with the above poster who wondered how a bobtail affected "fit"?

Most who've commented on bobtails have mentioned they aid in concealment, but several folks have commented they sacrificed the aid to concealment simply because they were uncomfortable to shoot a lot.
I have seen a few E-Series Smiths around town, never a bobtail though.

Let me try to explain the fit thing. A standard straight 1911 grip jabs me in the meat of my hand making it uncomfortable to shoot, ignoring it eventually makes it unpleasant to shoot. I tried an arched housing and that helped a bit but not enough to make a 1911 convert out of me.

I did own a Dan Wesson Guardian for a while which had a bobtail, that completely resolved the "fit" issue for me. It was a carry gun for me at the time, sold it because it wasn't quite the right balance of weight, size, caliber etc. But as far as fit went, it felt real good to hold and shoot.

My top pick in 1911 category would be second-hand Sc-framed (I'm fond of unusual not seen every day things) Smith & Wesson. I do not care for rest of them.

The Sig 1911 Carry is an awesome pistol. Very accurate and reliable. I picked up a new one from Grab-a-Gun last year for $750 and they are currently selling them for $849. Sig Sauer 1911 Commander Nightmare Special!. You are correct, the rounded butt just fits your hands better, more comfortable shooting as well. Used they go for about $600 over here in Florida. The only thing I did to mine was change the sear spring and add CT laser grips. Other than that it's stock. I kinda prefer to buy new if the price is reasonable. I haven't had real good luck buying used pistols. Seems like some people like to play seudo-gunsmith and dork with things they know nothing about and sell it when they screw it up. If you buy used just be careful and go over the gun very closely before buying. Especially if the seller is missing some toes or a foot.

What I was impressed with for the price, are the extras that come on the Sig - the very nicely checkered front strap, night sights, and they did a very nice job with the muzzle. The crown looks almost custom, along with the nicely finished barrel bushing. I've been very happy with mine and as I said above, it works great.

As for the bobtail... it DOES feel different than all my other 1911s with straight mainspring housings. personally, I find that I like shooting with a straight mainspring housing, but the rounded butt is better for carry of course. It's all in what YOU like.

I recently bought a new Nightmare Carry. Really nice feel, and a great shooter. I'm partial to the bobtail ergos.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. The particular pistol I posted about is still available but when I started really going over it I discovered the night sights had been replaced with a black post up front and an adjustable set in the rear. Then I heard the guy who traded it in wasn't the original owner, etc.

I just don't have a good feeling about it, decided to pass for now.

Going to consider the S&W E-series as well, harder to find, a bit more money but I've heard good things about them.

The E series is a great gun, Buds had them for $1177.00, that is the cheapest I have seen them, usually you are looking at 13-1500. I found 2 in a gun store in Melbourne and the guy wanted $1350, he wouldn't budge. But "shoot straight" had a coupe at the FT pierce show, last week around 12 hundred, that's without tax and call in. I would put it into slick guns, and see what you get there. That's where I found them at Buds.
You can get all blk or stainless slide and blk frame, I like them both.
It's just a lot of money, but not for a quality 1911, and I have heard of a few stories of extractor and ejector problems, but you hear that with all of them.
The original S&W scandium 45 was the Gunsite model that I ran across today, for $950.00 new from a local gun store. But they weren't bobbed.
