I've pretty much decided I want to get into a Springfield Armory 1911, and have it narrowed down to three models

1. 1911 G.I. 5" barrel, Parkerized
2. 1911 G.I. 5" barrell, Armory Kote (O.D. Green)
3. 1911 Mil Spec 5" Barrell, Parkerized

Are there certain advantages of the Mil Spec vs G.I. models, also how do people like the O.D. Green Armory Kote vurses the Parkerized pistols?
thanks for any input

Get the Mil-spec. It has way better Sights, stainless barrel, (GI has carbon steel) lowered and flared ejection port to keep spent brass from going down your shirt, (GI has standard) and the the Mil spec also has a beveled mag well.

You will be glad you got the Mil spec in the end. I promise.

Mil Spec, for the price difference you will be getting 2 to 3 times that in upgrades.

Depends what you want to with it (isn't this always the line that ends up in the beginning of a thread like this!). If you just want a gun to run some ammo through at the range, I'd go with the mil-spec. I won a 5" G.I. parkerized at a pistol match a year or so ago and it's nice with a vintage feel, but is a little loose and has poor sights for target shooting. If you plan on having a gun modified to whatever level, the "cheapest" gun might be the way to go as the gunsmith will likely replace all the "factory upgrades" with real match grade stuff. If the latter case applies to you I would actually ask whoever is going to do the work on the gun, they may tell you to get something else completely, a well used 70 or 80 series colt for example.

I have a milspec- the sights on the GI are, for me at least, difficult. the Milspec has a nice 3 dot system that is well regulated for 230gr loads. the L&F ejection port is nice if your a reloader- but i've never shot a standard gi cut so I don't really know how much difference it makes on brass. the beveled mag well is nice- sometimes I get little pinches with non beveled guns.

I can't comment on the park, as my gun is stainless - but the 2 sets of grips and other little goodies are nice in the milspec package as well.

I have the GI green model. I like it a lot. though admitdley the sights are poor(but fine for plinking HD ranges). If you can afford it I'd get the Mil-spec bc of the sights and the magwell. I havent had any prob with brass hitting me.

still they rust....

My barrel on my Mil-Spec loaded has some rust spots from all the carrying in foul weather. Otherwise it is a fine pistol except for that STUPID memory bump/goove/waste of metal.......

I like the OD green on just about every gun I have seen and handled... just looks cool.. that is my vote... no distinguishing between function of the choices.. falls to the cool factor...

I have owned both and agree with the others. Unless you are looking for a traditional WWII style 1911, go with the Mil-Spec. If for no other reason, the sights are worth it.

ive got both, i love my GI model dearly, i love the nostalgic look of it...this being said, i got a mil-spec for christmas last year and i have to restate, the sights alone are worth the extra money, for SURE

Got me a Mil-Spec (OD Green) love it! Shoots Great, tight groups at 25 yards. When i shoot Comp. Some other shooters say, He's shooting that D*@b "green" pistol. Great conversation piece. Just love it. And very easy to clean. SA does a excellent job on the Armory Kote.

Might I ask what "STUPID memory bump/goove/waste of metal" you are referring to? The only memory bump I know of is the bump on the bottom of some of the beaver tail grip safety's. And the Mil Spec comes with a standard grip safety, so I am confused as to what you might be talking about. If you could clear that up for me I would appreciate it.

Thanks

It's the sights

I recently upgraded my Norinco which is very GI spec with Millett adjustable sights. After doing that and replacing the trigger, I have grown to love the 1911 platform more than any other auto I have, or have shot. So I would get a model that has good sights right off the bat.
